Friend called me last night and asked if I could help him with the clutch on a tractor he bought a while back. Went to work on it and here is what he has. A huge ugly thing that looks vaguely like about a 3000 Ford and is painted blue and grey like the Ford were. This is a 4 cylinder engine with a decompression lever to let the starter and a single 12 volt battery turn it. Yhe engine has an exposed shaft coming out of the left back side of the front gear cover extending back by the block that drives an injection pump that looks somewhat like an old Caterpiller pump; that has a coupling between the shaft and pump.It has a parking brake lever like they used on large trucks in the 30's and 40's. The kind you squeeze the 2 piece handle and it moves the lock pawl away from a ratchet plate. It is a weird looking thing seems to be patterened along the lines of 1959 ag technology. The info plate on the left fender says; Hindustan Tractor made in India Model 61 G H,P,61 date of mfg 1994. Did not have camera to take a photo of this beast. He knows almost nothing about tractors, but was needing some loader work done and an unscrupelous car dealer unloaded it on him, and now won't even return his phone calls about it. Any body know anything about this monster? He needs a book at least on how to operate it and where to get some parts and service info.. Did a google search on it and found nothing about it. Thanks for reading this and any info would be appreciated. Gene Davis

I did a search on dogpile and got a bunch of hits for parts suppliers. It appears that a Hindustan 50 and a Zetor Super are the same tractor. Some of theses suppliers might offer manuals.

Sounds a lot like the British Fordson Major built from 1952-1964 in England, then in Spain. Perhaps now in India. It was a good and popular product in its time. 61 hp sounds about right. Another Indian company makes a version of the Ford 3000 and sells it as a Farmtrac. It has a 3 cylinder diesel. Ford and Fordson parts are pretty easily available.
I'm glad you sent this in, I didn't know it was still being made.

I have been told that the Chinese are building a total copy of the Fordson Super Major. These are mostly used in China, but some have begun to appear on the international market. As far as I've heard, however, none have been imported to the US.
Ever thing old gets new again.

This is a much more massive and clumsily built tractor than a Major. It is just plain ugly! The Majors I am familiar with are much sleeker styled than this. It is very primitive looking for the most part. Does not have smooth contours like the Major diesels that were sold in this part of Georgia. It vaguely looks like a primitive attempt to copy the blue and grey 3000 series Ford. I did find a brief reference to New Holland Manufacturing in India, might there be a connection? Any idea where might I find more info for him? Thanks. Gene

Well, the engine and parking brake description fit the Fordson Major to a tee. Styling of tractors changed dramatically in 1960's, Note Allis 190. They went to an industrial look, with brake-bent sheet metal. Some tractors are built for high crops and look big and tall. Could you please post some pictures of this tractor?

Gene: Just punched "Hindustan tractor" into Google and got batch of hits...one (Mahindra) noted Indian Gov't nationalised "ailing Hindustan tractor" and another had news item (no year) that Mahindra Gujarat was launching a new 40HP Hindustan tractor...others looked like parts sources.
Something we here in the west tend to forget is that the third world seldom has our resources, and the question is not how crude it looks but whether it works well (altho "ailing Hindustan" sounds like it doesn't).
There's a Mahindra forum on tractorbynet.com; someone there might know if Hindustan is now part of Mahindra. Good luck.

Thanks people. I will help him get hold of a Mahindra dealership.. Need to help him, he has been a friend for 60+ years and now may be in the early stages of Alzhimers, they are not sure yet though. Thanks for all the help. It will be sometime next week when I see him again. Thanks again. Gene Davis Tennille, Ga.
