I am rebuilding a 390FE for my 73' F-250.. somthing that has some balls and gets more than 10 MPG that my 360 is getting.. it is going to be (from Jegs) $1,300! HOLY COW! for hedders, rings, pistons, lifters, pushrods, intake manifold, fuel pump, distributor, coil, tach & clutch.. short list I thought.. so much for new heads too! O well.. I should be able to get my money back should I ever sell the truck, since I didn't pay much at all for it.. going to have twice what what I payed into the motor.. O well.. won't be the first time I have been near broke..
sorry for the rant! Tim Shultz

A few Years ago I replaced a 360 ci Ford with a 429 SCJ out of a mustang . Dropped in a 68 F-100 Ford Ranger . It had a 3.70 rear with a 4 spd Standard "top loader" Wide Range Trans . Made a nice truck . But you couldn't drive on wet road . Its just Money if you don't enjoy it "someone else will" Don't sound like too much to me .

Tim, the most important thing is to use parts that work well together. The Air gap intake is great for a car but not a truck. think torque. use an rv type cam , something like an edelbrock performer intake and a 600 cfm vac secondary carb. you want to keep air velocity high or you will kill the bottom end torque and it will not deliver good economy. if new aftermarket heads are not in the plan use D2TE castings, they will perform ok and have hardened exhaust seats. dave

A friend of mine changed the 352 in his 68 F100 to a 1969 390 2barrel out of a Galaxie station wagon. The new engine was in very good shape, with fairly low mileage and the 352 was pretty tired.

They also replaced the clutch while they had the engine out and had to come up with a pilot bearing for the 390, since the station wagon had an automatic.

The F100 with the 390 was like a different truck. I would guess it took half as much time to reach 60 mph as it had with the 352, and it got several miles per gallon better gas mileage--clear up to about 12! We decided that what must be most different was the camshaft and maybe the heads. The car cam must have been a lot hotter than the pickup engine cam.

My friend's son drove the F100 to high school and later rebuilt the 390 into a much hotter engine, with an aluminum intake and 4 barrel, as well as headers and somewhat higher compression and aftermarket cam. It really ran hard then, but was unusable in slick weather and was really hard on back tires.

If you are getting everything on your list for $1300, I think you are doing really well, that is a lot of parts. Fords had a number of heads on the FE engines, and some were much better for performance than others. I doubt that your 360 heads have very large ports. I would look for heads with the larger ports and then do a performance valve job on them. Or if your budget will handle it, the Edelbrock Performer aluminum heads are really neat, and then you wouldn't need to do the valve job, just lap the brand new valves in. Neat!

Will you get much better gas mileage? If your 360 is in lousy shape, it may improve some with the rebuilt 390, but I would feel very impressed if you get 12 mpg. But much more go-power? You bet! Good luck with your project.

Hi Tim, I did the same in my old Chevy a few years ago. I had to stop keeping track of the money cause it was killing me. Had a 305, built a 400, way more horses, better mpg belive it or not,old radiator wouldn't cool big motor, more hp gutted the first tranny, One year later gutted the 2nd tranny. Will pull a house down but the spending never ends. I do love driving it though.

My freind had a 62 Galaxy. He kept the same pistons after checking compression. So no lower end job.We put in an Isky cam and some headers I bought for my 59 T-bird but never used.We never took the engine out of the car.We did pull the heads and relapped the valves[no valve equipment]and put on new seals. The car ran quite strong. This was around 1986 and I have no idea which Isky cam we used.Anyway if you dont have to do the lower end you save alot of cash.390 is an FE series Ford motor and there is a good book on them called How to Rebuild Your BIG BLOCK FORD.My T-bird had a 352 cubic inch Big block with 390 heads and aluminum Ford intake manifold, stock Holley carb. There is alot of FE series speed parts at car swap meets also.Good luck with your motor keep some info posted.

If you think moving up to a 390 will help your mileage you might be in for a bit of dissappointment. 9-14 MPG is about all you can expect given the weight, aerodynamics and gearing unless you move up to FI and an OD transmission.

Tim, that doesn't seem like a bad price for that list of parts, usually summit and jegs are about the same,I prefer summit, just had some bad dealings with jegs service dept.. get the edelbrock rpm air gap intake, you'll like it.. good luck with the mileage on that 390,we had a fresh 390 in a 74..bone stock other than a mild cam,got 8 mpg on the highway empty..

seen you mention distributor..you can pick up a junkyard electronic dist. from a 302,swap the electronics onto your FE base, get new bushings from ford and you'll have a new electonic ignition for literally just a few bucks, done it several times..alot cheaper and probably more reliable than a new $250 MSD billet..

Tim

My engine kit for my MF65 ran $869 (here) and that was the cheapest price anywhere after shipping was calculated. I can imagine my machine shop bill will be similar...

Check out the old man's 393. He doesn't really say how much it cost, lest the sig other find out....

390 was a real good engine! thats way too much for a kit though,,,, look a little closer to home,,, just cause its a name brand company, dont mean there isnt a person or business that cant get that stuff cheaper. I seen a post earlier that your in Northern Indiana??? if so,, go to Bremen, Indiana,, there is a high performance shop in town that I betcha can beat that price, if not, I may know someone who can help. yeah, I shop at bremen every now and then.. since it is only about 10 minutes away. but I just figured how much the part would be from jegs, then I am going to have a buddy of mine see how much it would be from bremen. he is real good freinds with the owner or somthing like that.. so they give him a few bucks off.. so I am hoping that I can knock off 300.. here's hoping anyhow. thanks!
