I receintly purched a nice ford 601 with a wagner loader. I find that the oil in the loader is low as it will lift only about half way. I want to add oil but not knowing what type of oil the preveous owner used, can I get by just toping it off.I sure don"t want to change all the oil....What oil can I use...thanks

I wouldn't top off with a 32. It is so thin your leaks will get worse. I would use a 46. Heck Farmall calls for a 30W Non D in their liftall systems. I have used whatever motor oil I had available on any given day. Those old Vickers pumps are pretty forgiving. I wouldn't use it for a lifting device and stand under it though.
For highlift work it should be fine.

I asked the same question and people told me 134 hydraulic fluid and it did work better.they had been using ATF and it didn't work very good --SLUGGISH!

Well. the prev owner probably used either plain hyd oil.. like aw32/46 or UTF type fluid.

If i had to guess to do a top off, and not a change out.. I'd top off with UTF.. that way if my sump seals leaked, and i had oil contamination into the tranny or diffy.. I'd at least be contaminating it with an oil that is rated for a tranny or a diffy.. which plain hyd oil is -not- rated for.

You really don't know what oil is in there.. could even be 30w engine oil.. lots of people do that. Heck.. some equipment specs a 30w engine oil in it's hyds... etc..
