Sons doing an FFA project and I have to be the superviser on it. Boy does it bug me to just sit there and stupid-vis him when I could do it in half the time. But I guess thats how he need to do things to learn. I do the things he doesn't know how to do or the things that need to be very strong like the welds but. By the way hes building a forge and so far its comeing togeather pretty good. Nice thing is that when its done I get to use it since its in my shop LOL. Guess I'll be learning a new trade and maybe have some fun doing it

JustGrin and Bear it.For the greater part of my lifetime I had been training young fellows who had little knowledge except that from books. Most came from Maritime Academy or College. After several years I started reminding my assisants and fellow workers that we all had to be young (once ).Those whose Dads were Attorneys,Doctors or Accountants, usually progressed later than the guys whose Dads were Pipefighters, welders or mechanics of some trade, usually were at an advantage.Your boy is blessed in that respect.I will bet he'll do well.

Hes getting there. I have been letting him do some of the welding, but his welds look like bubblegum LOL. Ya its just prat of learning how to weld. Hes learning to use the chop saw, drill press and a few other tools that he hasn't even tried let alone asked to use till now. I just hope this isn't one of those things we build and then he looses intreast in it like some many other things

My dad had the same problem when I was young, except it was wood working....he was a skilled wood pattern/cabinet maker, fast and accurate, it was difficult to watch me struggle, so he would take over a project that was suposed to be mine/ours. I ended up finding a trade in high school he knew nothing about...metalworking.. and exelled in it, because I didn't have to compete with the old man's skills/knowlege.Now , don't get me wrong , I learned a tremendous amount from watching my old man build things, especially layout/measuring skills, planning a job, and orginization. and eventually even ended up back in the same trade... clay modeling, a trade that is art, skill, and patients, Old , grit your teeth, let him booger up a few welds, MAKE HIM FIX THEM, and explain why . he will thank you someday, and you will be proud of him for it...Shawn

Let him do the welds- if they're bad, you can show him how to grind them out and re-do. Its a forge, not a car- if it falls apart in the middle of the shop floor, nobody's going to get wrapped around a tree. Dealing with failures is just as much a part of the learning process as always being successful, which is something that the educational system seems to have lost in the last 30 years or so.

Just be happy he's interested in these types things instead of the many bad things young folks can get into these days.Just the reverse was true with my dad and myself he was an excellent farmer but not much of a mechanic.I took over almost all the mechanical work here on the farm when I around 12/13 years old.He died 2 years ago this Nov at age 83 miss him every day.

Old, Get out of the way. And stop doing the welds for him. How is he gonna learn if you insist on "helping"
No, he won't do as good a job as you, and, yes it will take a lot longer, but hey, you may gain a son. How many boys have moved away from dad because they could not be a man?

I would let him wled but with this being a forge the welds need to be good. Don't need it to fall apart when its fired up real good and burn the shop down. LOL

If it falls apart in the middle of the floor, help him put the fire out, tell him what he done right, explain what he done wrong, and inform him that he now has it to do all over agin. Answer any questions he's got, but put yore hands in yore back pockets an take a seat.
Success don't mean much without some failure to compare it to.

I'm letting him weld some area of it, but not the ones that is they brake will cause troubles. Hes almost affraid of the welder which also doesn't make it easy to teach him how to weld

Look on the bright side, old. It could be a lot worse, I've been doing this sort of thing day after day for the last 8 years LOL. It does get frustrating at times but teaching is not so much about getting the job done, but about passing on our skills to the next generation. Enjoy the time working with your son, I'm sure the forge will turn out just great.
