Does any one here suffer from claustrophobia? How have you been dealing with it? I used to be fine when in enclosed spaces, but lately I have been getting real nervous, and for the first time today, I had a panic attack while under my truck changing the oil. I had been getting this nervous feeling for about a year now doing that, but today was the worse. I seem to fine here at home, the grocery store or whatever, but getting there now is becoming difficult.I can hardly stand to be in the car for very long, but its not so bad I cant cope with it right now. Just wondering if any of you guys are suffering from this and what you do to cope...

I don't like to ride in the back of an X-tra cab pickup any more, didn't used to bother me but it does now. When I was younger I could set in the back of a small 2 door car with a girl on my lap, probably had other things on my mind.

I'm 53 years old. Been a volunteer fire fighter for years and a mechanic and farmer all my life. I've been in places that a lot of people who are not claustraphobic won't even go. A couple years ago, my doc gave me a perscription drug and one of the side effect is that it can cause claustraphobia. I didn't know that and probably wouldn't have cared but, I crawled under a machine about two hours after taking the pill. While laying there it looked like the mahine was comming down at me. Didn't take long to leave that area. Tried it again, same results. Waited a couple hours and tried it again it was better but not good. Don't take that medicine anymore but, when I'm under something, it's not the same as it used to be. Hate it but, living with it. Wish I never would have taken that pill.

Funny. Something similar here with meds and aging. Used to be able to do the training smoke house in the searing heat and zero visibility crawling around trying to connect to standpipes etc, no problem. 1st time I ever had trouble was after packing on a few pounds and right after eating too much at midnight on a backshift. It during training no less. I ran up four flights in full gear with a blacked out zero visibility mask. At the top of the stairs between the full gut and scba harness pushing on the belly. And being out of breath and also trying to slow down and talk clearly on the radio. I suddenly had the desire to ripe the scba mask off to get a breath of air. I kept it together and didn't loose it but it took all the will power I had. A fellow hunting buddy of mine was fine for years then one day doing a home renovation job. He just had to get out of a basement crawl space.

Aloha, I don't have it now but after Sunday's earthquake, I have to think twice about going under cars with jack stands. I think that I have to raise the car a little higher so I can roll out fast if needed. LOL

Yes, I know the feeling. Never have any major concerns with tight places, but this year I was introduced to the problem. They did a final pre-retirement hearing test where I worked in a very tight, completely dark and hot chamber and I couldn't tolerate it. Had to leave the door slightly ajar which allowed in some ventilation and a little light. Never had a problem with this test in the past. But changing oil under a vehicle hasn't been a concern, nor has riding in a car. Maybe I am just standing on the edge and peering over this phobia precipice.

This site is from down under (Australia) but since you were down under (your truck) when you had your troubles, this may help. (no pun intended)
Good luck, I do hope you can cure it. My Dad used to have to call me everytime he needed something done under the house. I called him a liar once as I figured he just wanted me to do the work for him but I found out different. He decided to prove to me it was real and slid under the house about 4 feet and proceeded to freeze. Mom screamed at me to pull him out and then I knew it was real, he was absolutely pale and his eyes were wide open and he was unable to speak or move. Very scary. It was several minutes before his color started coming back and several more before he could move or talk.

Ohhhhh h yes. It cycles, some times are worse than others. Talked to my Doc about it an he wrote me a scrip, but after two or three doses I knew I couldn't deal with feeling drugged either. Now I just deal with it as best I can, have the drugs for when it's bad or when I'm headed to a place thats gonna be bad.
I avoid crowds, elevators, tight spots, small cars, an I don't crawl under the house.
Some times when I feel "tight" or "jumpy" I can go where it is TOTALLY dark an do OK, beats drugs any way.
It is not that big a deal really, not all the time, any way. You'll learn to adjust an learn to cope. An if you don't try to keep it a secret those who love you can help a lot.
I had trouble at first because this was not a problem before my fortieth birthday. I thought you were born that way, or you were a sissy, or whatever. Now I know better, and I'm still a "real man". Email me if I can help in any way.
