I was just starting to make progress. While trying to get that little screw in the hole that holds the points down, it fell down in an opening. Grrrrr rrrr. Does it have to come out if I get another screw. Feel like I'm taking one step forward and two back. Any advice? Thanks

Hold the magnet as close to where the screw might come out as you can, blow around any openings with high pressure air.Usually it won't take long and you will see a screw sticking to the magnet.

I'm with you Jim, only I never did it for points before, although it might beat curling or shuffleboard. Harley

only screw i ever dropped in a distributor and left in there jammed it and ended up shearing the gear on the bottom of the shaft off.i would remove the distributor and turn it upside down to get the screw out if you cant fish it out.

Remove the dist. cap and make notice where the rotor is pointing. Then use a black marker and make a mark on the dist. base and the block. When installing the dist. align the marks along with the original rotor position, you should be okay on timing.

The cap is already off as well as the rotor and dust cover. Was I suppose to mark something before I took this suff off. SAY IT AIN'T SO. Or is there something I should mark now before I take the distributor off.
What I really need is small magnet like a wire that bends at a right angle to get at the screw. Probably not such thing, but if you have any other ideas let me know. Already tried me shop vac with a section of garden hose attached.

Try using a piece of steel wire held against a magnet. The magnet will magnetize the wire.

I'm sure there are a lot of distributors with screws loose inside them, and chances are that no harm will come if you leave the screw in. However, if that screw ever bounces into the flyweights, it can do a lot of damage. I'd sure try to fish it out with a small magnet. If you can't fit a magnet into the hole, try magnetizing a small screwdriver. Chances are that you'll get it with a magnet, but you can always pull the distributor and dump the screw out.

I have a magnet rod, but can't get the end in the opening. Do you think it is just below the opening or fell deeper. Don't know if I can find another small screw like that. If I have to take the distributor off, what's involved with that? I see a line running from the top of the carb mount and a mounting nut on the distributor. If I take it off will this screw up the timing? Thanks.

Just stick the rotor back on and mark the side of the dist. where it is pointing. This will get you close when you put the dist. back in. Do NOT turn the engine while the dist. is out though.
