Too darned many irons in the fire!

Been building corrals/fixin' fence since forever. I shut my eyes and see nothin' but staples, posts, stringers and wire. Can't see a bit of progress either. :>(

But, today the neighbor and I are gonna play cowboy and wean calves. Round 'em up, drag 'em down out of the hills and haul the little darlin's out to the farm.

Rackin' my brain trying to remember if I found all the gaps in that old tumble down corral. 'Spose I'd better load up some salt and mineral block and get this day underway.

Be careful what ya wish for. :>(

Do the calves get any vaccinataions? My calves have mostly been dehorned and elastrated, but still get the Pfizzer Gold shots and Ivermectin in the fall. If you can give them their shot two weeks before weaning it really cuts down on disease.

Well when you get done, run down here because I'm rounding everything up Monday. I'm going to bring all 3 herds in so I can wean them all at once. Probably wean Tuesday or Wednesday and then I'll sort the cows up and move them to winter pasture the rest of the week. Corn will have to wait for a few more days. David

Well, good luck and keep em well. Do you play a radio for the little kiddies so they don't get scared in the night?

Mornin Allan

It's that time of year ain't it.

My calf weening is gonna wait till I get done harvesting the corn.

That way the roar of the bin dryers drowns out the bawling of the calves.

Hey, I know!

I'll jack up the old 966, put it in gear and let that noisy rear end howl. Between that and the coyotes bellerin’ out over the horizon, that ought to drown 'em out. :>)

Yeah Sloroll I gotta do that yet also.

Usually let them calm down a week or so in the lot before I call in the doc.

Well luckily, that's all been done.

All I gotta do is get the brand inspector in here to write me up some paper. :>)

The Brand Inspector?

No critter can change ownership without first being inspected by the state brand inspector.

Say you sell me a bull with your brand burnt on 'im. I need state brand inspection papers to authorize me to own that bull which is carrying your brand. It's kinda like a "title" on the beast.

Also at the same time, I need a bill of sale from you stating that you sold him to me.

Bottom line is that you can't sell him and I can't buy him without the state's approval.

Cuts down on the lynchings out here on the high plains; we've got a shortage of trees anyway. :>)

Being the vets kid meant we did all our nasty jobs when the other ranchers didn't want to. It was always a snowy, sleety day when we made the calves "uncomfortabull." If I wasn't feeling so sorry for myself those days, I'd feel for the poor buggers their heads down, tails twixt their legs standing in the nasty weather afterwards. I'td be a day or two befor they would venture back into the barn and shed.
