does the 9 speed transmission add much to the value of a late 40s m and what would be the top speed.

I would say depending on what you were wanting to do with it. Some hay rakes would like a speed of between the standard 4th and road speed of 5th and that is where it would come in handy. equal to in the Deere the 5th speed that IHC never put in a H or M and on the light loads like the hay rake you could run the engine close to idle, save fuel, while still having the speed and power to pull the load, also would have been good for pulling wagons at speeds higher than 4th but where you could not use 5th for either lack of power or roughnes or curves.

The M&W 9 speed doesn't change road gear speed. It basically spreads 1-4 like 5-8. So 1st would be slightly faster than 4th and so on. As far as value is concerned it really depends on the buyer. I personally would pay less for it, I think it is a pain. I had a buddy that had the nine speed on his M and it got stuck in high range during a pull. Well, he didn't have enough power to pull then.
