Over the years I've owned several old Buicks with nailhead engines and have thought about installing one in an old tractor. They're great engines that look cool, especially with some chrome. Then it's a matter of figuring out which make and model of tractor to put a nailhead in. Well, maybe someday I'll get around to it....

The only way you can get a lot of HP out of the nail head id suppercharge it thus forcing more air/fuel into CYL.. I used to run one 364 CI 56 Model in 31 3window ford Coup with a 4-71 Blower and 2-4 barrels turned 145 in 1/4 mile . Engine developed about 425 HP . The was also a problem with CHY Himy "Small Valves .

I looked at the pictures and I am curious as to why it is called a "nailhead" motor?

Because of the engine's upright head design valve size is really restricted. Because the valves are small enough to look small hotrodders began calling Buicks "nail heads". The engines actually work well, though they don't like a bunch of rpm's. Torque monsters.

I have heard them called nailhead motors for years and the only thing that I have ever read was that they were called this because of the valves being small compared to other engines of that era.
