Need a little help with a green 5105 I got when dad passed away.
The tractor runs and operates fine. But, the steering is not right.
It works fine...no leaks seeps or drips, but the straight ahead position on the steering wheel keeps changing.
I went to use it Saturday and the deere on the steering wheel was kinda side ways. By the time I finished he was standing on his head going straight.
I am not used to hydrostatic steering and this is the first time I have had a tractor with it.
Is this anything to worry about or is something getting ready to die?
Any help is appreciated.

I have a 5105 MFWD . It does the same thing , as the others said it is due to the nature of hydraulic steering as opposed to manual or power assist steering. They are an excellent utility tractor, wish I had another one.

All the hydrostatic steering systems I have used are like that. My allis tractor has a little logo in the middle and it is hardly right ways when straight. There is a little "slippage" (not really since it is fluid), but since it is not a direct linkage, there will always be a little wasted motion in the steering wheel. To prove that these systems will slip, turn the wheel all the way in one direction, then with both hands, keep turning it, it will go real slow on most hydrostatic systems, probably not the best thing in the world for the pump or motor, but it shows that these motors have a little slip due to some fluid bypass (sorry, the terms are probably confusing, best I could come up with to explain it). Baiscally, it is normal to have lost motion in the wheel causing it to be in the straight forward position according to the tires in a different spot after turning most of the time. Hope this is understandable, if not, let me know and I will try to make it a little clearer than mud...

You make perfect sense Hurst. I figured there was just a little fulid bypass or something.
Thanks for your help.

Yes. Dad had one of those spinner knob things on it and it wore grooves in the wheel. They move as well.
I took the darn thing off because I kept catching my shirt sleeves on it.
The wheel is changing for sure.

I think that when you turn the hyd. oil may bypass and that causes the wheel to change positions. Just my idea cause some friends have a JD 4430 that does the same thing.
