I have been thinking of replacing my 86 dodge pickup. Getting tired of working on it all the time and want something better to pull a 7000lbs. gross trailer. I am thinking of a 3/4 ton,cab and chassie, with around a 350 cu.in. engine and a six speed manual transmission. I would prefer a basic truck, no power anything, no AC, or even power steering. Maybe a towing package, would consider a limited slip rear end. Can any of the American trucks be had like this? What should I expect to pay for such a truck? Just thinking, getting started now, haven't done any checking at any local dealers yet.

Most trucks come with Power & A/C .
I have a Chev Silverado 3/4 ton 6 ltr gas auto trans 3.73 rear it pulls a 7000 lb Utility trailer with out any problem. an on the road "Trip" running 60 MPH get 17 MPG around town about 14 MPG .

Well thanks all for the comments and information. Likely I will drive it for 12 to 15 years, maybe more if I can keep the fuc&^%$ salt from eating it. My 86 is getting some rust issues here and there. The sheetmetal is still decent as I have oiled the voids nearly every year, however the front suspension is geting questionable due to rust and I have 200000 on it. I live in Rhode Island. I want a cab and chassie because I don't like pickup bodies, and would be taking it off anyway to put my existing flatbed on, or possibly building a fresh one. I want it simple so it is easier/less costly to fix. I don't like a bunch of automatic stuff either, would rather control it myself. Anyway, thanks for all the replies, some good points to get me thinking.

Just a thought, but depending on what problems you're having with your current truck, and prices of new trucks, would dropping in a new drive train resolve your situation?

Stay away from the Ford 6 liter diesels, especially the early ones. Mine has been a royal PITA. Not even three years old and has spent at least 10 weeks in the shop to date. Two sets of injectors, two turbos, and then an entire engine replacement at 82K miles. New engine has 3K miles on it now and is behaving like the old one already. The 7.3 liters were a proven engine although didn't have the kick that the 6 does. That's what I'm going to try to find to replace this POS.

I have an '03 f-250 crew cab with standard shift and 7.3 diesel. I really like it. I can't see pulling what I do without power steering and brakes.

Nope. Power steering is gonna be standard. So is AM/FM radio. I ordered a base 2004 Dodge and A/C is standard along with a tilt steering wheel. I got carpet delete, 4.10 rearend but they made me buy limited slip to get it. As for the cab & chassis, don't do it. The take off box is worth more that what they will discount. But yeah, you can still buy standard cab work trucks. They just ain't as "standard" as they used to be.

I am a Dodge and Chevrolet dealer, and we stock quite a few base model trucks, as we are in farm country and still sell a lot of them. We deal in quite a few cab & chassis also. I am in east central Missouri, I do not know where you are at, but I'd be happy to help you in any way I could.

I sent an email to a Dallas radio talk show host last night and ask him. He was the top Ford dealer in Texas for years and in the Nation at least once. He said you can get the truck (I ask about a 3/4 or 1 ton Ford) without air, but not without PS or PB.

Most of the bigger dealers in the big towns have no problems getting a truck like what you want. Go to a dealer that has a Fleet Sales department.

You will have a hard time finding a "stripper" on a dealer's lot. They make much of their profit on options.

I suggest that you try spec'ing out a vehicle with the minimum options you want, then with a few extras, then fully loaded. You may be surprised at how little extra the "loaded" vehicle is over a vehicle with a few options. That's because of the package discounts when you get multiple options. For instance, with the last Chevy I bought, the limited slip differential was free if I ordered a couple other options. (I forget exactly which ones, but they call it the "power package".)

Chevy and GM have good sites where you can spec out different options. I don't know about the other manufacturers, but you can buy a "new truck price guide" book to compare. Note that the discount packages change frequently; the dealers will have the latest info.

I work for the Air Force and they buy (actually lease from GSA) trucks such as you are seeking by the hundreds every year. All the trucks we have (including the panel trucks used on the flightline) have AC, stereo radios and power steering. They all have automatics also, but that is because most GI's have never driven a standard before and the military got tired of putting in clutches. They started buying them with the extra options seven or eight years ago because the manufacturers started charging extra to leave them off. No one buys a vehicle anymore without at least the basic options evidently.

Tom you are smart to buy the stripped truck with fewer gadgets. They are all built to get you into the showroom to go WOW, and then a couple of years later they all start to give you grief. Power windows that wont go up or down in the winter, climate controls that have a mind of their own, air suspensions that are total garbage, heated seats that the heating element fails in so you have a cold seat that you paid $500 extra dollars for, stereos that have power amplifiers and speakers that start crackling after a few years, electronically controlled automatic transmissions that have speed and position sensors all over the vehicle that leave the vehicle on the side of the road useless if one of the sensors go bad. About twenty door position switches on the doors that have to all be tripped in the zero degree weather or all the dome lights stay on, electronically controlled transfer cases that sometimes like to be in 4wd and sometimes in la, la, land. Less is better on any new vehicle, but it sounds like you know that already. I know too because I was foolish enough to buy a Lincoln Navigator which is not only the worst automobile I have ever owned but is more than likely the worst item I have ever owned period! Keep it simple and don't worry about resale value. None of them have any resale value so the less that you pay at the dealer to begin with the less it can depreciate. Good luck.

I agree. It's not so much to get the original sticker price down as it is the long term reliability. Simple vehicles are simple to maintain. Just like the old M's, DC's, 60's, etc. are a whole lot easier to maintain than today's sophisticated models.

Hey Tom, just thought I would add my opinion. I don't know if you plan on driving your new truck until it is junk, but if you buy a stipped down basic truck with no A/C, no radio, manual windows/locks, and a manual transmission, you are going to have a truck with no resale value if you decide to sell, you could stick it on your lawn for sale and it would sit there forever before you found someone to take it off your hands when your talking that basic. The best deals are trucks that are on a dealers lot. Look for a basic trim package, and get one that has all the cheaper options, this way you will get yourself a much nicer truck and could sell it a whole lot easier. I would spend the extra money to atleast get a halfway decent sound package with a CD player, since I enjoy listening to the radio, and wished my truck had a cd player instead of the stupid cassette deck. All the saftey equipment comes standard as was mentioned in a post already, such as anti lock brakes, air bags, and power steering comes standard on all new trucks. If your going to be towing alot, I would suggest getting a motor with decent power, you said around a 350, but since chevy stopped putting the 5.7L 350 into pickups, you will have to settle for the new 300hp 6.0L that replaced it. If you are looking for the most gasser horsepower, Ford has it with their 362hp 6.8L V10 (yes Ford has got the Hemi beat). Good luck with your new truck purchase and look for a left over 2006 for a deal on it.

Well having bought a newer truck this year I can tell you that unless you are very lucky or order direct from the factory you are hard pressed to find a basic truck. I am not a leather seat fan, that is my main gripe when it come to trucks. I like the nice stereo and other little options but I had one heck of a time finding one with the nicer options with the engine and ext. cab I wanted that still had the cloth seats. The work trucks I seen were all standard cabs and were always white.

Shoot a 1986 truck would be new to what I use. I have a 1980 heavy half chev and I'll run/use it till I run it into the ground and then maybe even rebuild it. To me one of these new japan steel/china steel trucks are worth about as much as a manure pile

Call a local dealer and ask. Post back as I have wondered how much "stuff" could be left off by ordering. There are some great buys out there right now as sells are down and 2007s on the way, or here now already. You may get a few options and rebates on 2006 that would give you more truck than what a stripped 2007 would cost.

I believe youll find power steering and brakes is std equipment on all full size new trucks and maybe a/c also , along with antilock brakes and air bags.Usually you need to go to a one ton truck to get a cab/chassis unless youy order it. I have found the best deals are found by trying to find pretty close to what you are looking for on a dealers lot , if you catch them at the right time. I saw good deals on basic 2wd 6cyl pickups earlier this fall, under $14,000 with rebates etc.If there is a truck trader paper in your area I"d check that , usually dealers with alot of trucks advertise in them and that would give you a ballpark price. I believe you can go to kbb.com and get dealer invoice prices too. Good luck.

Tom, this isn't what you want to hear, but; I'm old and retired and all my life I bought only the equipment which would get me by, no creature comforts. Two years ago I bought a 1-ton, 4wd, loaded Dodge/Cummins with which to pull my RV. It is the most amazing vehicle I've ever owned. I drove them all. None compare to this truck. I wish I had 'squandered' a little on me years ago.

I think maybe you deserve it.

I hear you man. I drove worn out stuff for years.

But last year i got a pickup with all the bells and whistles. Man when I hop in that thing after a tough day of working out in the cold and turn on the heated leather seats, it's all worth it.

Pulling my loader most of the time and I just push a button to let the tranny know what we're up to. Push another button to find how much oil life is left.

I figure I paid my dues and deserved it. And by shopping right, I got a heck of a deal on it with only 25,000 miles.

Have you tried the manufacturers websites? I think you"ll find what you need. You can check models, specs, packages, etc. and then "build and price". I think you"ll have a problem finding one stripped down like that on a dealer lot. Most dealers order them with popular packages that usually include air, etc. In theory, that saves money over individually priced options. In your case, you just don"t want very many options.

When I was a kid (not real smart), I believed if one was so lazy as to have power steering, he shouldn't have a vehicle. How ones perspective changes over the years..... .....my $.02
