I have a k241 kohler engine in a 104 cub cadet I bought a few weeks back. The engine runs well but smokes a little out the air filter. No smoke whatsoever out of the exhaust. What causes this? Is it something with the valves? I would like to fix it myself if possible. Mike.

I am not sure about the 241, but the 321 and 341 have a breather just below the carburetor and when you start getting blowby into the crankcase, it is vented out the breather. When it gets bad it can speed up plugging the air filter. Someone makes an aftermarket adapter to route the blowby down under the chassis to keep the smoke and oil mist off you and the engine. I think it was a garden tractor puller parts website. I made one for mine by fastening an elbow thru and added hole in the breather plate and hooked a hose up to it and it helped. You could also route it thru a hole in the end of the air cleaner and shoot it straight into the carburetor, but that seemed like too much effort to me.

Mike, just a thought here, but my riding mower does that after I have had it leaning over on its side to remove and sharpen the blades. After I run it for a while it quits smoking

No, I have never had it jacked up or anything like that. It only smokes when it is fully warmed up, very slight at idle. Threre is just enough to make you notice it when you put a load on it. There isn't even any residue on the inside of the filter. It will pop or sound like it has a slight miss sometimes but the power doesn't seem to be affected.

The poppen noise is probably the exhaust valve.....If you dont already, use straight 30 wt oil..... then add a cup of STP.....

It could be a valve adjustment and/or a burned valve.
I would recommend downloading for free a manual for your engine at kohlerengines.com.
