Starter won't stop running even when off!

I have a Ford 3000 Diesel with a brand new starter installed by the F/NH dealer when I bought it (1 week ago). It was 30 degrees out so I gave the tractor a sniff of strating fluid to start it up. I cranked it over the forst time and it ran for a few seconds than stopped (normal) I then gave it a tiny sniff of ether and cranked it over again. This time the starter clicked on and started to zing! Did not engage the engine and ran continuously. I turned the key to the off position and even pressed the auxiliary started buttong a few times but the starter would not turn off! I immediately ran to the starter and tried to loosen the battery cable but the nut was too tight to loosen by hand so I ran to the car and happened to have a huge adjustable wrench which I loosened the battery lead with, but ended up breaking the lead terminal on the wire. This obviously stopped the starter. When I touched the battery cable back to the battery it had a large spark still, but the starter did not turn immediately. This is with the key out and the button not pressed. So what could cause the starter to run continously, not engaged to the engine and not turn off even with the key in the off position? This just happened this morning and I want to get some advice before I accidently fry myself on an apparently constantly charged electrical system.
Thanks

I agree with the rest, bad starter solenoid.
But I'm wondering why the starter bendix didn't kick out and try to turn the engine over.

Either you got had with used parts from the shop, or Ford thought they had a BetterIdea[TM]. Again. 'course out in the field, they usually turn out not to be so hot.

I would contact the dealer, and tell him of your problem. He should say bring it back. Stan

I can't address your Ford specifically but I'll throw in something to check.
You wrote, "the starter clicked on." The click says you have a solenoid. Is the solenoid mounted on the starter so it appears to be a part of the starter? In this case what you did was disconnect the battery side of the solenoid.
The problem you report can only be caused by a failure to disconnect the battery from the starter. This would indicate 'stuck' starter switch or solenoid contacts. The solenoid could be held up by the control circuit. Check backward from the starter toward the battery to see what is holding the battery to the starter lug.

Sounds like your starter solynoid is bad I would try changing it out before I went any further. Always a good idea to keep a few common hand tools on the tractor, never know what will go wrong from day to day.
