Well, I had to sell the best Black Angus bull I ever owned. Weighed 1865 pounds. He had two bad habits. One I was adjusted to was that he was too tame. If you tried to drive him, he stood his ground and shook his head. He wouldn't argue with a tractor or truck, however. His worst problem was getting out. On one occasion he dismounted a steel gate and on last occasion broke a wooden gate. He had nice calves some of which I'll keep, but I couldn't stand having him on a busy road. Maybe Allan could have used him out there on the open range.

When I was 14 I went to work for the neighbor, mostly changing irrigation pipes and haying. They had an Angus bull, and he spooked me the first time I changed pipes in his field- kept following me. Mentioned it to the boss, and he laughed and said, "oh, he just wants you to scratch his head with the end of the pipe. Do it a few times, and he'll wander off." Problem solved. But I do realize that you don't want to get them too tame, or they'll lose their fear of man, like my wife's Pomeranian has.

Use to have a black Angus bull. He enjoyed visiting the neighbors cattle. He did not lift any gates nor jump the fences. He just got down on his knees and crawled under the fences. Was glad to see him in the cattle trailer, taking a visit to the sale.

Angus go under the fence, and Herfords go over if I remember right.

KEH,

This might be an entirely situation, but my horses lifted a couple of steel gates off their hinges and went off for some fun on their own. I finally realized that when I put the hinge bolts into the fence post, I was supposed to put the bottom one in so that it pointed up and the top one in so that it pointed down. That holds the gate on so it can't be lifted off.

I went around and changed all of the top hinge bolts on the all of the gates that I had installed, and haven't had any problems like that since.

Sorry you had to sell your bull. Mine stays home, but I constantly fight my neighbor's bull to keep him over on his side of the fence.

Bulls that won't stay home are no good anywhere. Your only salvation is that they pound out pretty good. Often times the old bull will bring what the yearling replacement will cost.
