Maybe we dodged the frost / freeze bullet last night so the tomatoe harvest may continue (I'm not sure if that is good or bad). Anyway for the fun of it I decided to post a history of the crop up til I got too busy to take more pictures.

It began Dec 24th. Weather turned warm so I decided a nice thing to do on Christmas eve was to recover the greenhouse.

Looks like a ton of work...how many acres and when all the dust is settled, do you make much out of it? To whom do you sell?

Thanks!

about 1 acre total of tomatoes. ~3000 plants rows are 6' on center and plants are 2' apart in the row.
We sell almost entirely retail at our own farm and also a 3 farmers' markets. Make money as long as you don't consider your time worth a whole lot. We got $1.25 or more / lb all summer. The retail market is the only way I can make any money on this farm.

It would have been nice for those of us with dial up to have shrunken the pictures before uploading them. The display software crunched them down to 626 by 436 or something like that so the 1538 x 1228 file sizes took all afternoon to download with out viewer benefit.

I see that water wheel planter accomplishes what I was thinking I'd need three separate mechanical arms and a fancy ground drive to accomplish. Is it commercial?

As for the wife, she's definitely a "keeper."

Cool Pics!
So that machine punches holes in the plastic so you can plant the seedlings?
How fast do you go. walking speed or slower?

slower
With the double row of peppers it is hard for the planters to keep up. I am pulling it with a CaseIH 885 in low range, 1st gear, TA on and idiling. The peppers are spaced 17" apart in each of the double rows and offset. Water is dumped into the wheel and out the punch hole and so you are pushing the plants into mud. If the soil is right the water and mud will cover the plug and the plant will be set. Sometimes you have to go back and put some dirt around the root ball. If the plastic isn't tight or it gets too windy we throw some dirt on top of the plastic to hold it down.

A hydro transmission would be nice.

You need a creeper gear in your tractor.

You are right, or a hydro transmission. I went to look at 2 different ones, a Hydro70 and a 656Hydro. both were gas which sort of put me off and on top of that neither one would start. Was that a sign or what? So we struggle along with the 885 as slow as we can and go back and set the ones we miss by hand. I"m hardly big enough to justify another tractor but still looking.
