I have a standard Allis Model G generator that is 6 volt. Can this 6 volt generator be successfully converted to a 12 volt generator by using a 12 volt voltage regulator? Thanks.

Well BAW, the best advice I can give you is to keep the generator 6 volt and get your electrical system in good shape. That includes good and proper-sized wires with good connections, good grounds (especially where the starter mounts to the tractor), good #1 battery cables, and the mag or distributor set up and timed properly. If that is the case, why would you want to go to 12 volt? The 6-volt systems work GREAT if they're set up properly, every bit as good starting and operating as a 12 volt.

Wasnt this posted on another board also??? Ive also converted simply by just using a 12 volt VR. A gennys output is increased by turning it faster and/or pumping more current through its field windings which creates more magnetic field strength. They arent super high rate chargers when done this way but they will work, better way is to have a genny shop change the field coils for 12 volt operation.

The worst that can happen is that you need to turn it faster to get the charging started.

I did just that with a Farmall H. I noticed that it was putting out way more than 12 volts. Then gen makes volts - the regulator does just that, regulates it down to 12 or 6. I did this about 10 years ago, haven't had any problems with it yet.
