OT: I don't like hunters!

No offense to those out there who hunt, but I'm really starting to dislike hunters.

Why?

Because they seem to have no respect for private property. Last year, our fence was cut twice by someone who apparently needed to drag a deer out. They don't seem to care at ALL that we have cattle, and that having the herd escape could be disasterous.

Even when they don't cut it outright, they unclip the wire from the t-posts and tangle it up so that they can cross. This leaves us with compromised fence. I've spent the last two weeks straightening out the areas where these "stewards of the forest" having been coming and going as they please.

Sorry for the rant.

As a hunter I tend to take umbrage with being lumped in with other guys who have no respect for others property, or even other hunters.

I do agree that there are many hunters who are bad examples. And unfortunately I think the percentages are quite a bit higher than 10%.

What can I do except make sure that nobody that I hunt with does anything rude, inconsiderate or illegal?

I just don't see why anyone would think that another persons property is free range for them, to do whatever they please. They obviously didn't have any parental input as children.

Stayed at home under the weather one day last Fall, in the basement, on the computer. Car was in the garage, no lights on, overcast day with a foot of snow on the ground, wife's tracks going out. I'm sure it looked for all the world like no one was at home. Around 11:00 AM our driveway sensor went off, I figured it was my wife coming home for lunch, and didn't get up from the computer. After some time the sensor went off again. I went upstairs and out. One of the aforementioned "Stewards of the forest" had driven up my lane, across my newly graded/seeded lawn (Sure, it was under snow so they couldn't tell, but c'mon), around the house, across the back pasture, and out again. As I followed the tracks I heard shots a mile North. They'd pulled onto my place running them. As I made my way back to the house, my wife pulled in for lunch. If I hadn't been sick and my wife had come home minutes earlier...

Good friend buys an place that was long time in one family 400 acres, on a small mountain nearby, nice place, awesome view, nice rugged mountain and wooded area, some really nice whitetail herds. He inherits the locals, just blatantly overunning the place, a literal circus of "behuniaks" ( funny story behind that term, actually a persons name ). Poaching, tresspassing, you name it, no regard at all. Hunting season, same thing. These people were stubborn. All set against him. He sat at the local country store, and listened in on them talking about the guy who bought the old harbinger place, even asked what he thought about himself, they did not know it was him.

Now here is a guy who can deal with a few things, an army ranger, with all kinds of extra training, like the pow school, etc. also a pronounced martial arts background, I've seen him still win fights after recieving a broken jaw, years ago when he used to do the matches. Now none of that ever means anything, but I had waited for the day one of these people went to far, thinking to myself, if he ever gets a hold of one of these clowns, it's gonna get ugly real quick.

Well he's camo'd up, hangin out in the woods given em H$LL, nails em poachin, gets em convicted plays it by the book, so they burn his barn down in retalliation. Wife and kid are now terrorized by this. All over a whitetail deer. I hunted his place, carried my trusty M1A handloaded with a light 130 grain hollow point and a nice load of IMR 4041, forget that one now. It was miserable, how can you relax and enjoy hunt in a veritable war zone. Well some how we got some quality time on the place, friend takes a nice one there. By now this made the front page of the news, still have copies of it. So while my friend is field dressing the deer, a white van rolls up slowly, I look at my friend, and ask, who might this be, you expecting anyone ? He says no, so I drop out of sight and focus my scope on them, just in case. I see the letters, FOX NEWS, I'm like WTF ????? Great, here I am thinking it's a drive by going to happen. More media, they want the story on the barn and even took footage of all of us, hanging the deer, etc. What a weird night that was.

One time, wore my hunting tag in the Adirondacks, while doing some hunting a few miles in, run into some northern "behuniaks" say good morning, they stare at me, I keep walking, now there was 12 of them, all liquored up, encamped right on the trail like a bunch of camo'd trolls, and he says you ain't gotta wear that, matter of a fact it pi$$es me off. Here I am thinking, hey bud, did you happen to see what a lune like me carries for a hunting rifle and can still lug it for a few miles and can hold a 1" group to 300 yds no problem. Thinking to myself, why are these people messin with me, I just want to enjoy the place, walk. explore, do some hunting etc. I got as much distance between me and them as I could, then out flanked their camp, and observed for awhile, make sure I did not grow a tail. Drunken, filthy bad guys. I forgot my tag was exposed, it sure drew em in, called my buddy a few miles ahead and told him we need to cross that camp on the way back, but in a pair. I walked right through again, not a peep out of them.

People are literally insane over deer. Tresspassers, property owners, signs, people poaching, ATV's, all the associated problems and issues, it's insane absolutely IN-sane ! I spoke the trooper about my friends problems on the 400 acres, they discussed it with me, as I had some similar issues at our place, told them I knew him, they were really worried about the standoff up there. Tough to patrol a place that big, they obviously had a tough dillemma, very hard to catch people, etc. etc.

I keep a tight lid on our place, they know better to cross the line during the season, I just don't even want to deal with them, stay out and leave me alone, please, it's one of the few things to enjoy this time of year, friends visting for a hunt on prime habitat, with lots of clover patches and grasses, abundant wild apples, they dig right in over here. My friends have taken the largest bucks off the property in the past, I could care less, I take what makes sense, some people just get crazy, tell em you saw a big one, boy that will draw them in. There are no trophy size deer here, some very elusive older bucks rarely seen, and a nice overall composite herd. What is it that makes people so crazed about deer?

I only hunt our place now, I go out to my stand and just enjoy the outdoors, get some peace and quiet, fill my tags when the time is right, and provide some food for myself. People used to hunt to survive, a cultural tradition, passed on generation to generation, by people who respect the lay of the land and others property. The attitude some of the hunters have today is terrible.

My family had to deal with some bad hunters over the years. But for the most part when you post your property and try to let in only the good somehow the good weeds out the bad. What's bad is we always hear the bad and seldom hear the good. Not long ago ( few years ) there was a hunter that saved a farmers life. Very few people ever heard of that but every year you hear all the bad stories about hunters. We tried it both ways, no hunting at all and only letting the good in and it worked best for us to only let the good in. It seems by only letting the good in they respect the owner and the property more and watch out to protect that respect.

As a retired state conservation officer with 25yrs. on the job, maybe a few comments here might help you guys.
Firstly, most hunters are legit. It was only the 10% that strayed that kept us busy.

Landowners: Make sure your land is posted legally. Often we'd round up trespassers but have to let 'em go if the criteria wasn't met. And be willing to sign a complaint. Odds are you won't have to go to court. Most plead out before trial.
Meanwhile, you'll be surprised to see how far even one ticket will spread the word in your area.
Often, trespassers are busy violating more serious game laws that may tie into an ongoing state investigation somewhere, so call your ECO regardless. Since remaining legal areas to hunt is shrinking, hunting pressure may even increase for some of you. Bottom line, be careful out there. Don't wear brown during deer season and be pulling out a white handkerchief. People have been fatally shot doing that.

My main problem is the former owner of my farm (realitive) thinks he still owns hunting rights. He invites all the cousins down every year to hunt. I've told people who actually has rights, but he's got them convinced he does. He even told me last year that he doesn't want ANYONE else hunting my place and got mad when he found out I had some friends from Michigan hunt there last year (coming back this year, too). Turkey season is another story! Didn't even know it was ANY hunting season, so I'm out working on a fence when I hear guns shots and hear shot pepper my pickup about 15 feet from me.

Your fault. Why don't you stand up and tell him like a man - - NO HUNTING for him. I hate to hear people who complain behind others backs, but don't have the guts to face the person and lay down the rules. Tom

Need help - low gear stoped working got it back to garage in high gear. the rear has crack in it. what would cause low gear to stop working? any idea - should I get a another rear, could it be the hydo cylinder, or the hydro control valve? I spent $800 on at local dealer to replace the PTO with a new PTO kit and I want to save $$$ on this repair if I can find used parts to fix hydro drive.

In my area it seems hunters are more aggressive and have less respect for private property and landowners every year. The deer are a pain in the butt but the hunters have gotten to be a bigger problem.Seems like if I give one or two permission to hunt in a coupleof weeks they'll have a dozen guys with them.Too lazy to walk to a gate just ride the fences down.Run 4 wheelers when I explictly said NO 4wheelers etc etc So now I automatically say no to any hunting requests and just let a couple of old friends that still have respect for private property enjoy some prime whitetail hunting.

Those are'nt hunters....... in reply to hillbillyOH, 10-07-2006 06:17:01
those are just plain ol' trash with guns and campers.

I reallize the problem is we just have'nt created enough descriptions yet for describing the difference, so "hunter" will act as a title for both the good and the bad. Sort of like "hero", the word should be reserved for the elite few that actually are heroes, but it gets used to describe allmost anyone that dies for the news medias profit.

As a hunter and former hunter safety instructor I wish I could disagree, but I can't. More than animal rights groups, the slob hunters are the reason that hunting will be banned within forty years.

Hunting may be banned in many years but, then people will still hunt deer, fox, bear, turkeys. Once you make something illegal people will still do it and maybe more of it. (Like pot) it has always been illegal but people still smoke it. A good friend of mine hunts, a lot and he obeys the laws and is respectful of private property but I agree that some are just plain rude.

What states are all you guys from? Here in Iowa we too have a few slob hunters. But really for the most part nearly all ask permission and are courteous. When one is arrested they of coarse make the news--and then everyone thinks the worse and accuse all hunters as bad. I'm a park officer and will ride with the conservation officers on occassion. Atleast where we go around here I'd say the high majority are good. Maybe it's worse where you guys are from???

i agree with most of the comments on hunters here, I am constantly running people off WITHOUT PERMISSION or getting calls that someone is on us at one of the farms.
I even had one guy that runs a hunting lodge tell me that he didnt want my boys hunting on me because they may bother his paid hunters on the ground next to me, thats when I informed him he no longer had permission to track hit deer on me and I posted all the ground. Still had to threaten to cut a bow hunter out of a tree last year while he was cussing me for trespassing on my ground.
On the other hand the (all hunters are bad) isnt true. Myself, buddies and our kids have all hunted since we could carry a gun and we WILL NOT go on someones ground without asking, we know most everyone here and have never been told no, but we ask first. And I use the same policy on my ground, if someone ask;s me and I know of nothing bad about them I will ok it but aslo tell them to always ask each time they want to go to make sure my kids arent there hunting. And i give them one strike then they dont come back
I know there are alot of azzholes with guns but we all arent bad

As both a landowner and a former hunter, I have seen both sides of the issue. We have been tespassed on had our equipment and outbuildings shot up and been cursed at. At one point, I hated to do it, but I had to post our ranch (2000 acres) because of some vandalism. As a former hunter and hunter education instructor I've seen pretty bizzare stuff.
You take in the young ones and teach them right from wrong and then they get out with their parents or other adult hunting companions and all the teaching doesn't mean a thing if it is not reinforced.
I will agree with the hunting lobby, that the only visible hunters are the slobs. If you have a person that is following the regulations and the laws as far as trespass and property rights he never gets into a confrontation with the public and doesn't get his name in the local paper.
Don't know where the happy medium is, but I can definitely see both sides.

Sorry about the lengthy post, but this issue (both sides) is pretty close to me.

Dan

Yep,we're constantly running hunters off our land at hunting season.
Last year,I called the sheriff on a couple guys, and told them they might as well wait for them. The jerk had the balls to tell me he couldn't believe I called the cops as he's the owner of an electric co.and didn't see a NO TRESPASSING sign. I told him he parked almost on top of it and didn't care who he was.
We also get all the litter from breakfast sandwiches up & down the road along with beer cans.Beer at 7:00 in the morning?

You are exactly right about the slob hunters. We have truck loads of drunk, armed strangers rolling by during hunting season. They routinely trespass, and litter, and they seem to hate song birds as one rarely escapes their fire..... .. The hunters always say it is one in one hundred that causes the trouble..... ..I think they have the ratio wrong.
I don't like hunting season either.

These stories always bother me because years ago befor I owned my own land I had to ask permission to hunt and was often turned down. Its like any other group there are good and bad. Today if one guy shows up he usualy gets permission, groups can forget it.

Lou,
I have a slightly different take on it.

When we first bought our land I was shocked that the hunt club with several hundred acres behind us thought nothing of crossing the well-marked property line and coming far onto our property. If they came upon my shop they usually wanted to know what I was doing out here, didn"t know there was anybody around. Not exactly comforting to have strangers shooting around you, assuming nobody lived there.

My solution was to lease hunting to a small group. Their primary job is to run off everybody else. Works like a dream. One guy organizes it and I see the same faces every year. They don"t pay a lot, and know it, so they"re very eager to keep me happy. My rules are always followed. Last year they gave me a rifle in addition to the payment.

Individuals? Not worth the trouble. After several years with the same group, I get almost no individual requests "cause everybody knows it"s leased. Works extremely well for me.

My son's landlord did the same, they own a lot of timber and used to let no body hunt, he did not want the liabilty if some moron got shot tresspassing, so he leased it all to a hunting outfit, they keep all people out unless they are a part of the group that has paid to be there, he even told my son he could not hunt out back, becasue it had been leased for hunting, don't have too much tresspassing problems any more, the people who leased the ground keep it pretty well policed up.
