three-point question?

Hi folks,
what I was wondering, is if all three Point Hitches are the same as the Ferguson system? because I understand that they have a feedback through the top link that controls the hydraulics. so the depth of your plow remains constant. and if they're not all the same as the Ferguson system, do I need that feedback system? I don't anticipate doing anything more than brush hogging, or blading.

Thanks folks, Tom

One other thing that was mentioned... The ferguson draft control was not meant to keep the plow at a constant depth.. it was used to maintain a constant draft on the implement.. thus the plow depth could change depending on soil conditions.. however the draft would more or less remain constant.. etc.

You are wondering about "draft sensing".

What tractors are you considering?

Some tractors do this with the toplink, others with a torsion rod setup on the attachment point for the bottom arms.

Anyhow, the main purpose of draft control is for plowing.

Some folks DO use draft control for blading, however I think the blade does better work with the lift in POSITION CONTROL, rather than DRAFT CONTROL.

, well, that's a good question. I'm wanting to get a tractor of some kind. but I don't know anything at all about the three point system, except what I've read here. and I've had a little bit of experience too , but just blading. what I remember is that there are two levers on the back, one for position, and I think the other was a float. But I'm not sure. a lot of the tractors that I've seen don't have a three-point on them at all, so I was thinking about adding one.I have also located a case model VA. that has an aftermarket hitch on it. But I'm not so sure now whether I want to go through the trouble of adding one, because I'm not so sure how the whole thing works. if the position control is a constant pressure set up, that it's probably doable. I don't know much about the Case VA , if it's a homemade unit it may not work at all,if somebody's just put a cylinder and a spool valve on It. thanks, Tom

"Position Control" is simply a mechanical feedback mechanism that makes the 3-point return to a pre-set depth each time you lower the implement with the control lever.

There are LOTS of home-made or "jobber" 3-points around that simply use a double-acting valve to control the depth, as judged by the operator, and folks seem to get along fine with them.
A mechanical stop can probably be rigged to stop the lift's drop each time at a predetermined point.

thanks Bob,

Well, I'm a lot clearer about things now. It wouldn't be hard then to make a three-point, and added on about the same time I am doing the front end loader, and the belly blade, and the roll bar, and whatever else I can think of.

Thanks, and best wishes, Tom
