About this time last year I was starting to consider a timber harvest and asked for your advice. The harvest is complete, I worked with a consulting forester that managed the sale start to finish. A local amish man was the high bidder, and the logging crew was amish right down to the horses. I am very happy with the job they did and look forward to the next harvest. Here is what it looked like.

Sounds like the way to go if you don't want much damage. I've always heard it's a god thing to thin out the woods a little bit so the rest of the trees can grow properly.

Dan,
Can you post some pictures of the woods pre and post logging? I have 10 acres of walnuts that I almost had logged, but was worried about the damage they would cause.

Glad things went well for you.

Do they use chain saws or all hand tools? I have heard that horses are less destructive in the woods than skidders. Was that your observation?

mjBrown, They used Stihl pro series chain saws. They did very little damage and created serveral new trails that I can now use to gain access for fire wood cutting.

Hi Dan, what part of Ohio do you live in? How much property was logged? I have several acres that I've thought about "thining" a bit that's full of tall, straight cherry, black walnut, oak and maple. I'd like to get it done, but always worry about the dammage I've seen after this is done. Any suggestions?

cj3b_jeep, I live in central Ohio on 20 acres. This has been my home for 27 years and I was worried about the damage. Even after having over 200 trees harvested the appearance of the wood around me has changed very little, thats the best I could have hoped for.
