Patient: IH 584 Diesel Ser. B500214B008038-X
I was mowing some tough grass, and it started to cough and sputter ever so slightly. I stopped, and idled down. Revved up ok, but started coughing again under load. Quit mowing, and tried getting back to the shop. At idle it runs ok, but the fuel flow is inconsistent above that. It'll rev up and smoke a bunch, then idle down, might stall out, then it'll rev up again with no pattern or anything. Limped it back to the shop and looked things over. Nothing majorly wrong that I could see. Went and got new fuel filters and changed them. After that it started just right and ran great. A few mintues of running in the shop and it started messing up again. I let it idle for about 15 minutes, and when I came back it was going fine. I got cocky and decided to try mowing again. It coughed and sputtered under load but worse this time. Limped it half way to the shop and it kept dying, then it wouldn't start. Dragged it in, and there it sits. A retired IH mechanic told me it might be the hydraulic governer, and that it wasn't cheap. I know working on an injector pump isn't cheap. Does anyne have a clue as to what went wrong? Would it be cheaper to find a good used pump and just plain switch 'em out? It has this pump on it:
O(or)D-11 Bosch Made in Germany
24309725
0 460 304 242
VA4/10H1150CR8/3
I'm in a bind here and I hope you folks can help. Thank you much.

Check the fuel flow at the pump, take the line off at the front of the pump and look at the flow. The fuel tank needs to be mostly full first.

If flow is slow work your way back to the tank, the line that crosses the front of the engine is bad about restricting internally at the braided portion.

Restriction can cause air to enter the system and the engine will smoke alot.

Those IH's are famous for plugging the fuel tap at the bottom of the tank and plugging the balance line between the bottom sections so it looks like you have fuel in the tank when in fact you don't.

if i am not mistaken thies pump ues a banjo type fitting. i have seen junk collect in them stoping the fuel flow going into filter also where the line come from the bottom of tank it a shut off type fitting junk colects there so before you remove the pump undo the line at filter and tank blow back through line making sure it clear then check shut off for junk you can blow through it remember to remove fuel tank cap. but the junk well still be in the tank best to remove the fitting and clean it.thies tanks are split tanks so you need to check the line running between them at bottom of tank on both sides.

I think I'll try that tomorrow. Seems like the tractor is running a lot more erratic and off-the-wall than a simple fuel stoppage would cause. We'll see though, thanks.

Myself i would be checking the flow first before condeming the pump ya could have a restriction in the line and when she is callen for more fuel it is not getting it and when ya let it idel down she starts to refill the filters . It should have a good strong flow going to the filters and if not then shot some air back thru the line . I have found all sorts of things in a fuel tank and now nothing supprise me . Then and only then would i pull the pump.

How do I check fuel flow if the engine isn't running? I don't understand how it can be gravity-fed, and I don't see a fuel pump anywhere.

Pull the line off the primary filter and make sure it has a good strong steam of diesel.

However, if it was foggin' smoke, I still think you're gettin' plenty of fuel and the trouble lies in the pummp, tho.

Hope this is a simple fix for you,

Allan

Yeah there's definitely smoke. Burned my eyes when it was in the shop, even with both end doors open. I still don't understand how I can find fuel flow if it's not running, though. How does the fuel get from the tanks on the back of the tractor to the injector pump? I 'spose that's my question.

You know if you take that pump off, some deisel shops will check it for nothing. Least you know you are on the right path.

Check the filters? My dad's 5600 was doing that this summer, he was sure it was the pump. Come to find out someone had given him the gift of about 2 gallons of water in his tank.

Yep, put new filters on. That was the first thing I did, hoping it was easy fix. It wasn't, but needed new filters anyway.

Oh we put a set on, it did fine for about like yours did. I pulled them again (won 20 bucks too, he said no way they were already fouled) and they were half full of water. Lasted 15 more min and it did it again, drained the tank and it had 2 gallons of water in it. I ripped him a new one about his storage tank, all in good fun of course. Sheriff had 11 reports over 2 weeks, they caught the kids, 15 and 17.

Hmmm, that is a possiblity. I don't know how water could've gotten in that tractor though. Maybe I'll open the bottom plug on the filters and see what comes out.

Wow sounds like something is heating up,does the pump have a mechanical shut-off or electric?

Mechanical. You have to pull the knob all the way out to shut it down. I considered something was heating up, but I can't figure out what it could be.

I wouldn't go with a used pump. Do a rebuilt or have yours gone thru along with the injectors.

Your fuel system will be good for another 30 years then.

Do you have an idea what it would cost to have the pump looked at? That retired mechanic told me $800-900 to fix the hydraulic governor, if that's what's wrong. Frankly, those figures scare me, and money is very, very tight where the tractor resides. I think getting the pump off and gone over is the best option as of yet though.
