I want to purchase a trailer but need to know the minimum width I need between the fenders to carry a Farmall H or M or others. What should I be looking for as far a the minimum?

I haul an M and other tractors on an 84" wide , between the fenders trailer. Even if you push the wheels in all the way, an M won't fit. You have to turn at least one wheel. With an H you need the wheels in. The trailer gross weight is 7000lbs and the axels are 3000 each, with brakes on both. I pull the whole deal with a 1500 GMC 4 wheel drive with a 327 gasoline engine. It hauls well and stops easily. For wide wheel bases we use 2, 10"w x 6"h x 6'l, wood blocks.
We run teh tractor up on them and then chain it down. This way we can haul wider tractors.

For hauling an M Regardless if you pick an 84" deck between the fenders or a deck over trailer you will need to get 5200# or 6000# axles with brakes. A well made 18' or 20' trailer with mounted ramps will likely weigh 2400# to 2800# empty. This puts you in the range of 9000# to 10000# just for the tractor and trailer depending on options like weights (front or rear) and ballast in the tires. Getting equipped to haul an M ups the ante on the price of the trailer and the capacity of the truck required to pull it. If you stick with H's you can get by with a well built 78" trailer with brakes behind a well equipped 1/2 ton truck. Search you budget and put safety first. H's can look just as nice as an M and require a lot less fuel to haul and run if you are using them for recreational (therapy) purposes. Be Happy, but Be Safe First.

I have a 16' tilt-bed trailer with a 2' dove tail that I haul my M on, been doing it for ten years. I have my wheels dished out so it will almost fit between the fenders, there's enough weight on the front so it does'nt have to go all the way between the fenders. If I had the skinnier 12" rears it would fit, mine have the 13's on the rear. My trailer is a 7000# GVW so I am right at the limit, a 10'000# GVW would be best but the lower center helps.

An H will fit between the fenders, an M will not. You need to look at deck-over trailers.

You could probably put the H on an 84" wide trailer, my H and B fits on my 84", but my M and F20 needs to be put on my bigger deck over trailer to be safely hauled.

You don't want fenders. You want a full width deck either 8 or 8 1/2 feet.

Get a deck over tires type trailor. Any trailor with rails will cause you problems hauling tractors. Max with a trailor can be and be legal is 8.5 foot wide so if you have a trailor with fenders then the rails will be about 6.6 feet between the rails and thats not enough for an H or M unless you push the tires/wheels in all the way and even then it will be tight. I usually like to stay out of trailer discussions but today I can't resist. My 84" between fender trailer has FREQUENTLY HAULED a B three different H's an M and a W4 and a W6 even a C with Woods mower. There's always been foom between the fenders. I guess up here where I come from we just don't bother to put the wheels out so they're wider than the implement!! A fender over trailer is higher , takes more or steeper ramps and is more costly. There, I should have known better than to discuss trailers on this forum.

Your right on all points but after you have hauled a tractor where the tires are on one or both rails you will then learn to use a deck over trailor. I know I have one of the ones where a lot of tracotrs I haul sit on one or both rails and its no fun loading them since you have about 2 inches of mistake room
