Hi Ya Dave;
Nice collection of green 'uns ! You must be an expert in these machines.
I am considering converting my 1944 BR electric start & lighting from 6 Volt to 12 Volt. Have you any advice you can give me please? The 6 volt turns over slowly and 6 Volt is almost impossible to get anything for in England. I thought that 12 Volt would spin over the starter faster and the tractor be easier to start.
Would I need to have my starter, dynamo & regulator re-worked? Can I use existing wiring loom?
All help and advice from anyone will be gratefully appreciated.
Thanks David

Should be able to find another 12V generator and then decide if you want to go with positive or negative ground. Yes, would need the field coils changed and different armature in existing generator and 12V regulator. Starter could stay the same or be converted also but probably needs bushings and brushes anyway. On some of JDs when converting like that the 6V starter put on 12V spins too fast and won't let the impulse in magneto catch like it should for starting. The properly converted 12V starter won't do that. Some regulators will work either way for ground polarity while others are only for one specific ground type. I agree with the others if you can get bushings, and brushes and get starter and drive and generator in better shape they may work just fine. The larger size cables are a must on a 6V system too. A lot here are also using the gel type 6V Optima brand batteries if you don't mind the look of them or can hide it in battery box anyway. Old Willys jeep we had always worked fine in winter with 6V after rebuilding starter and generator and all new cables. Contact Mike Greene over there at Independent Ignition and see he has parts or can tell you who does there. He use to wind mag coils for me till guys over here got their act together again.

I assume that dynamo = magneto. If so, you can just replace the voltage regulator with a 12 volt, change the polarity to neg ground, and change the lightbulbs to 12v. If you have a coil and distributor, it gets more complex.

Nope Dynamo equals Generator

They're actually all original in their starting/electrical systems so I can't help you much. I know 12 volt will help you spin it faster, but I've always been able to make a six volt system adequate for my needs. I've read about people switching them, but I don't know for sure what you've got to do. I'm sure someone will step in and show you the way here pretty soon. Sorry for my lack of help.

before you change over have you done the following:
1.removed all clamp on battery repair ends
2.replaced all cables with 1/0 or bigger cables
3.used the bigger ground stap for 6volt not the little one for 12 volt
4.cleand and recleaned all connections including ground at frame

the above will cure problems with the average older tractor. after 40-60 year the cables corrode inside, at the ends etc. Rust devlops under the ground connection and seems like somebody has replaced heavy cables for 6volt with lightweight 12 volt cables.

6 volts works fine IF repaired back to original (new) working condition

IF you still want to change then the starter stays the same, the dynamo(generator) needs rewound or replaced with an alternator and the voltage regulator needs replaced along with all light bulbs and a ballast resistor (60-70's Chrylser auto) needs installed before the coil
Good luck

As an alternative to adding a balance resistor you could replace the coil with a 12v coil one.

I've also heard that you can use the generator by adjusting the voltage regulator but have never seen this work corectly. A single wire alternator with internal regulator is the easiest as alternative to one with an external voltage regulator.

Also you need to switch the ground from positive ground (standard on most 6 volt systems) to negitive ground (standard on almost all 12 volt systems).

As a quick change you could just swap the battery and coil (or add a balance resistor) and charge the battery when it gets low. If your just doing parades/show this may be all you need. It won't hurt the generator or electrical system but will burn out the 6 volt bulbs fast. just make sure the coil is installed correctly - plus side of the coil makes it's way to the plus side of the battery. This is what determins positive ground or negitive ground. If the (-) side of the coil is attached to the points in the distribuitor you have negitive ground - if the (+) side of the coil is attached to the points in the distribuitor you have positive ground.
