A friend just picked up one of those Mil. mules. 4 Wheel drive and 4 wheel steer. Sort of looks like a small flat bed truck with wheels and and engine. Neat little thing to drive around, and boy does it get with it if you put it up in high range.

Is that the one that's about 8 feet long and has a boxer engine under the back? I used to see one of those when I was a kid in Lisbon, Ohio. Looked like a great little firewood hauler!

Don't know if its a boxer type engine or not. I know its a hercules engine and yes it sits under the back end and is just a flat bed about 8 foot long.

Hey Old,

That AC with the grader you have on your web site is too cool for school! How rare is such a set up?

Tim

I'd call it uncommon but not rare. Its factory built by Allis and is just a WC tractor that they cut the frame on and extended it and also put a wide front on it. Then they add the hand wheels and blade set up. I've seen a few around over the years but not very many. Years ago I even saw one on the local new as it was being shown at the fair in the town.

I remember a guy that had one, he used it for building / repairing fences. It was perfect for that, carrying posts, wire, etc...

Watch out Rich, they turn over fairly easy if you turn to quick and going little to fast, don't ask how I know...:>(

Those balloon tires make it easy going through mud also. You can lock steering, where it is only two wheel steer.

Airborne units used them to transport ammo for heavy weapons, and extra ammo for Ground Pounders. They could be loaded up with all the ammo and air-dropped along with Airborne ground units.

Keith, would you happen to know how you lock the rear wheel steering on one of them and if you do can you explain how to do so. I was talking to my friend today and he said yesterday he almost had the rear end out run the front end because the steering has some play in it so he wants to see how it does with the steering locked.
Thanks

He told me he had traded for it the other day but he didn't explain what it looked like. I figured it was an air plane type mule till today when I went over to figure out why he could get it to start. Funny thing is he cleaned all connections, had the starter checked and even replace the soliniod but he didn't think about the battery. I hooked up a differant battery and in 2 or 3 turns of the engine it was running. After I saw it I now think I would love to find one but I would add a cab if I did find one

Can't ever recall seeing or reading anything about cab for Mule. Infantry equipment, was never one to have anything on them to shield you from the elements. Just canvas to cover pay load.

I imagine a hard cab would make it pretty noisey inside.
