Late response but here she is in CT two weeks ago. I just missed a ride on her traveling buddy, a B-17, by 5 minutes....darn.

Witchcraft sucked a sea gull into a port engine and was temporarily down for repairs.

I miss the sound of the old piston-engine bombers. When I was a kid in the 50's we had lots of them around, since we had two active Air Force bases just west of Spokane. Fairchild was a SAC base and they flew B36's before they went to B52's. Nothing like the sound of a B36 taking off--huge pusher props AND jet engines.

I always go to the local airports when I hear about warbirds coming in. We have had B17's many times, B24's a few times and even a B29, which is supposed to be one of only a couple that are still flying. And various fighters. My hat is off to the folks who have preserved them and kept them flyable.

We still have Fairchild as an active base. I see the KC135 tankers all the time in and out of Fairchild. Once in awhile we see a B52 or even the beautiful B1 overhead, but nothing like when Fairchild was a SAC base.

I sure would like to hear a B36 again, but I have read that there are not any still flyable and also that they were extremely expensive to fly. So probably only a memory....

A few years ago they parked a b-17 at our local airport overnight enroute to a show somewhere else. Of course word got around it was there, I stopped by after work to see it. An old man was there with his grandkids,I think he had been a mechanic during the war and the stories he was telling the kids were incredible. I sorta followed along listening, I probably learned more in that half hour than any whole day in my life.

I work about eight miles from the EAA grounds in Oshkosh Wi. There is no sound like those radial engines. There was a B-17 that few over many times low and slow. Every time I heard it comming, I went outside to watch it. I never get tired of that sight or sound.

A good friend lives about a half-mile from me-was a pilot with the Flying Tigers in China and WW II. Name of Ed Bollen. He's 84 y.o.! After the war, he stayed in and got to fly the jets until retirement! Two fellow students in high school went into the Air Force after graduation. Learned to fly bombers. (B-24s) Went to England and France. On a bomb run over France/ Germany, another plane in formation got hit, fell thru the formation, hit their plane, cut off the tail section, and the plane crashed, killing the two guys i knew from school! Strange part--the tail and top turret gunners managed to parachute out, and were saved by the Germans! Although, they did get sent to POW camps, until war was over!

I saw a B-17 fly over over our place a while back, and was mowing near the local airport and saw one come in for a landing. While in the Navy I was around the large radial engine aircraft. It was a great experance. Hearing those radial engines start is a sound you will always remember. Stan

My dad was stationed in China in WWII with the Air Force "Flying Tigers". He was never one to talk much about his experiences, so I didn't get a lot of history from him. While cleaning out the house after mom died, I found a box with photos taken during his stint in the Pacific Theatre. Pictures of he and his buddies...but in the background were these MAGNIFICENT airplanes...B-17s, B-24s, P-38's....WOW!

Was working in St. Louis a few years back and was walking out of the office to the truck one afternoon. Heard a plane that sounded like a B-17. Looked up and there is was flying over. They were showing it the next day at a little airport up there. Enjoyed going to see it. There were actually some vets there to see it that were on bomber crews in Europe during WWII. Really great guys and it was an experience for me to meet them and shake their hand. Kind of sad also. One of them had tears in his eyes as he was just standing there looking at the plane.

The next time you see a bunch of high school seniors at graduation visualize them in thoses B17's &B24's . Throw in a couple college seniors and put them in charge and you got your WWll aircrews.

My parents lived in Ann Arbor, Michigan during WWII and said that every hour a new B-24 flew low overhead after taking off from the manufacturing plant at nearby Willow Run Airport. That would have been a cool experience.

The B-24 Liberator was produced in greater quantities and flown in more theaters of war by the air forces of more countries than any other four engine bomber in World War II. 19,256 planes (in several versions) were produced by Consolidated Vultee, Ford Motor Company, Douglas Aircraft and North American Aircraft between the years of 1939 and 1945. Today there are only two flight-worthy B-24's in existence.

Showcrop, You got a rare treat, seeing Diamond Lil come over in a low slow pass, She was at the Lincoln Nebraska Air Show this last weekend. I recon she is on her way back Home, Midland, Texas. She isn't scheduled for any more shows short of the Oct show there at Midland. Hopefully you were outside and not inside a pickup or tractor cab! Those 4 Pratt & Whitney 1830-94 radials do make a sound that can't be duplicated any were else. Hope you enjoyed it I would have loved to been there.
Later,
John A.

Only one left? what a shame. My brother was a gunner in the pacific. They cut them up for scrap, but at lease we saved some old tractors.
