It is a 3 1/2 HP vertical and about as simple as they get. No choke or mixture adjustment. Only a primer bulb. What causes them to run too rich with black smoke? Thanks

One other possibility might be the surface between the carb and the gas tank. A roll pin and teflon washer kit was used to fix a mixture problem on an older type unit somewhat like yours when it was running too rich and he adjustment screw would not take care of the problem. Don't neglect the spark plug. Some will do crazy things.

plugged and dirty air filter.

loose mounting screws, especially the single one that holds the foam air cleaner on top. This needs to be in, even if the air filter is removed

problem with the pump diaphragm between the carb and tank.

I suppose the timing could be off, due to shearing the flywheel key. Most won't run after this happens, but I had a couple that did and they ran rich, and had no power. IT wasn't off by much, but it was off by enough. New aluminum key and everything was running perfect again.

just a few possiblites...
