Continental F140 needs more grunt.

I have a tractor with a very tired Continental F140 in it although it is supposed to have an F162. Since the blocks are the same, can I just bore it out and put the larger pistons in it? What else could I do to give this old girl more power? If it had overhead valves I would mill the head to increase the compression but obviosly that won't work with a flathead. I have ported many heads in the past. Will opening up the ports help much on this??

Why not? Flat head refers to "side" valve rather than "overhead". Some overhead valve engines actually have flat heads!
As long as the valves don"t hit the head at full lift, you WILL increase the compression ratio by milling the head - and a lot more per mm than an ohv, as the area is that much bigger! Anyway I have found that flatheads have more "grunt" than equivalent OHVs for equivalent power rating.

I agree with RAB. F163 had higher compression ratio than the F162; bore and stroke were the same. But if you try to go too high, you can have head gasket problems....

Why not put AN f162 0R F163 in it? F163's are pretty plentiful in the forklift business and I have a dandy one in a miller welder that may go for sale if I can't get the welder to work.
