Had a guy call me today wanting to trade a Ghil skid steer for a ford 9N I have, 9N has a sherman over drive. The Ghil form what he says has an onan 38 HP engine and he parked it a month ago but now it will not start. He says it has saprk but not getting gas. So is that skid steer worth as much as on old 9N that smokes?? Also the skid steer needs one tire
Thanks

Gehl T handle controls, I just traded for a 4400 gehl w/4cyl Ford motor. The left hand T handle is a little sensititve it seems to me. What is the update that was available? and can you tighten up the T handle so its not so sensititve. This one has a short 1600 hrs on the meter and it is pretty darned straight with almost new tires. Ser # is small (1180) so I figure it is a early model. I runs great!

Jim, your s/n would be before the friction bar on
the lever. That came at s/n 2601. Poss your Gehl
dealer would know if you could add it on. This is
completely different than the reply I had for the
gentleman who knew of a man in an accident. That
is a different control. They added a front baffle
over the lever on that machine. Good luck, Chuck

I can't speak to an upgrade,

The control friction is a simple spring loaded slide that has an indent where the center position is. Located in the square tube the controls are in (easy to see). If properly adjusted it prevents the forward and reverse control from jumping between forward and reverse (I call rocking). My wasn't set properly when I got it and I had to adjust the linkage (tighten up and remove slop) and tighent up the friction springs just a tad.

As to the post below, While I can't speak for all models, there is a seat switch that kills the machine if your not in it. If equiped (my 4500 is), unless the seat switch has been bypassed you can't operate the loader from the bucket. It too is easy to spot. Right in the center, under the rear edge of the seat mounting plate.

Another safety feature to look for is the boom locking valve. Mine is one the left side. It is a electric hyd valve mounted on the cyl. When power is shut off it closes the valve to prevent the boom from droping if not running and/or the operator in the seat.

I guess it depends on what you plan to do with it. If it does have a Onan engine it is going to be weak on power and likely pretty light (read no diging power) I have a Gehl 4500, ford 4cly, 35hp, about 3800lbs. My buddy has a little older ford with a wisconsin 4 cyl, 18-20hp, maybe 2500lbs. No compairison. He can't even dig out cattle stalls. Bout all it is good for is moving loose material.

As far a the T handles go, I don't mind them. Pretty simple operation. Just check the control friction. If its has none you can get it rocking pretty good (scary). My buddy's Ford sucks with the two outside handles. No room between them (?16"). My (skinny) 16 year old complains about sittin like a girl (legs together) when using it.

The older Gehls were made by Hydra- Mac which was a started as a division of Stieger. If it has an Onan and car tires it is probably a small one I'm thinking 18 hp which would be more inline with an Onan engine. They used 2 levers-one for vehicle control and the other to control the loader. I think they are pretty simple to run.

Several Gehl Skid loaders had the Onans models:
360 2500 2600 3000. The size of the 3000 series
is 22.5 hp. No Onan in a Gehl had a 38 hp eng.

I didn't think that ONAN made that big of an engine. Is is gas or diesel?

If it doesn't have the special skid steer tires, it will be awful hard on them. And the correct tires are expen$ive.

If that skidsteer is in any kind of useable condition at all I think it would be a fair trade. I would love to have a skidsteer loader, I think it would be just handier than a pocket on a shirt.

Yep they are. I just took my friends Bobcat 373 back to his place yesterday and I know I'll miss haveing it around to play with. I also know if I trade for this one it will out work the one I just took back to him. Of course it was here in the first place so I could fix it for him again. Don't know what it is with him, he gets on a machine and it brakes, I get on and they run a long time before troubles. Guess maybe he just doesn;t listen to them and the way they should sound

Dont mean to be rude or anything, but what is a Ghil skidsteer? I assume you mean Gehl, right? What model is it? E-mail me and I can get you a pretty accurate price. I work at a dealer that deals with Gehl. Thanks, Jon

I have no idea of what model it is. What can I say I wasn't sure on how to speel Gehl. All I do know about it is it has an onan engine that is around 38HP and has 13 inch tires. The guy said the tires where like what is used on a car, so I don't know anything more

I have had an 8n and have a 600 Ford. Also have a 600 Bobcat. Old 1969 model. I love my old skid steer and would problably trade in a heart beat. I use it all the time and only mow with the 600.

I don't like the gehl controls, only have one lever to control everthing. It's a T handle that
you straddle and twist it to turn and pull back or push forward to move, very dangerous had a neighbor get killed with one several years ago.

Ray, If that skid loader(dangerous) still in the
area? Gehl corrected that open lever on any loader
they or the dealer could locate with an update.
Don't know if still avail. Most of our customers
liked the controls. We too knew of an accident-
the operator was standing in the bucket running
the machine. With the retro fix he couldn't have
done that. Chuck
