We have a '97 Ford F350 at work we are going to sell and I was curious what kind of life expectancy one could hope to see. It is a 2wd dually with heavy duty tow package ,460ci engine. It has had all the regular service with top quality oil. It has 98k mi and has done a lot of interstate towing with about 4000lbs of trailer behind it. It has never given us trouble and burns no oil.
Thanks

If the regular service included the transmission flush at 50K or so it will be good for another 90K+ or so as long as you continue the same maintanance. As someone mentioned below, those 460s do NOT last long if they are being over revved.

Yep had that.
Thanks for all the good replies. I will have to get all the service papers together for it.

I have an old beat up 90 Ford Ranger with the 2.9L engine. It currently has 367,000 on it and is still running good.

I have no experience with the 460. But I had an 87 with the 302 and 208,000 miles and a 97 with the 5.0 and 147,000 miles and never a problem. And interstate driving is the easiest kind (assuming the driver wasn't hard on it) and 4000 lbs in not much to tow.

My '89 Ford with 460C.I.EFI came back from an 1140 mile round trip to N. Mex. last week with 216000 miles on it and I put in 1 qt. 20/50 Quaker State Oil. Has a small leak around front Seal so not all was used by Engine. It's job is to pull our 36' Jayco 5th wheel trailor which scales at 11,000 LB. Avg. Fuel is 6.5 to 8 MPG. Mostly around 7 MPG. It has K@N Air system and the Cat Converter is Empty. No other Mods have been made.

Well my Ford that had a 460 in it at around 98000 while in for some freebee work from ford they messed up both heads and had to put new head on ya could see the crosshatch pattern in the cylinders just as plan as day . Now mine got and oil change at 3000 to 3500 miles and i never ran it any harder then the hyd. lifter would allow somewhere close to 6000 RPM and Never ever hauled more then it able to load on the trailer and as of two years ago was the last time that i saw my old Ford it was still going then and i sold it back 99 to a farmer with over 287000 on her .

I have a 1987 Ranger that I bought from the original owner in 1989 with 27,000 miles on it. I drove it for 15 years. The original engine went 461,000 miles without ever being opened up. It had regular oil changes at 5,000 mile intervals.

With that kind of care, I would say atleast twice the miliage, about 200,000 miles before the motor would need a rebuild. It all depends, those big blocks don't last too long if you like to rev them hard, but if driven nice and easy, I'd say you can get some good miles out of them.

Well accoring to Fords TV commericals they are good for 250,000 miles ! LOL !!!! If it has been trouble free so far it should be good for some more miles, but you never know ? If it has an automatic ? and since it towed alot the tranny is going to be the weak spot or clutch if standard.

I used to drive for a company that drove folks to the airport 100 miles away , we had E150 hitop vans with 302's and belive it or not we would get at least 5-650000 miles out of a engine with the poorest of maintance but trannys we would go thru about 3 . And then throw in another motor and run them another 400000 or so miles them sell them off

Everything should be good for another 98k,ACCEPT the tranny if it is automatic. It WILL need rebuilt or replaced in the not too distant future.
