What were the old tractors called that were operated with reins? I know there was at least one manufacturer, but were there others? If so what were they called?

We used to have 2 four legged ones. They would go almost anywhere without getting stuck. The exhoust was a killer tho.

EIMCO made one and I've seen several of them. I can't remember what they called it, though.

Thanks for the artical! I can't get over how many times something can get invented or how many ways it can be done. Looks like an Allis B or C. I would lean towards the B. Neat! Jeffcat

The Harris Power Horse was one, in its early versions at least.

From the "Unusual Vintage Tractors" by C.H. Wendel "About 1920 General Motors bought the manufacturing rights for the Jim Dandy Motor Cultivator. The result was the Samson Iron Horse. It was a line-drive tractor, meaning that with two leather reins or lines, it could be driven much like driving a living, breathing horse. Design flaws, market resistance, and fierce competition doomed the Iron Horse to a heasty end".

There was another one, probably a bit later than the Samson. It appeared to be built of Allis-Chalmers components. I can't remember the name of it now.

Right. I can't think of the name, either. I'll take a look in the old tractor book tonight!

Big problem with those Clydesdalea and other draft horses was the smell of the exhaust.
