Allan or anyone else,
I am about to plant wheat. I am waiting fir the ground to dry some. Should I fertilize now or when? I am just starting to learn about all this. I really enjoy the information that you regulars give.

Thanks
Devin

Hey Devin;Maybe I should not butt in,but if you are just starting you will probably get some great info,by reading ACRES USA.I dont work for them but have been a subscriber for years and can't wait to read it every month almost cover to cover. I go the same route as Allan and use as few chemicals as possible. ACRES is about sustainable farming. If you want a free sample copy call 1-800-355-5313 and ask for it. If you feel like it,tell em I sent you.John Cooney alias Ol CHief. I sometimes buy 10 copies a month and just pass em around to locals cause I believe this mag. is so good for folks like us. Otherwise call me at 830- 997 8296 and i'll mail you a current copy.

Hi Devin,

Yes, a lot of fellows put it on when they plant. Many apply it before they work the ground to plant.

I don't use the stuff. I like the legume rotation/lay-by idea better.

Allan

I"m with Allan, I thought it was strange the first time I heard someone talk about fertilizing wheat every year...I remember once in a while putting some anhydrous ammonia on (maybe once every 5-8 years, nasty stuff, my eyes burn just thinking about the smell). Just plant it, with fertilizer costs what they are, I can"t imagine you would gain enough yeild to pay for the fertilizer...

Thanks for the info. All I plan on doing is baling it for wheat straw. I have a few people who will buy it from me.

You do realize that if they are wanting to buy wheat straw, you will have to combine it first right? Customers won't be happy if they buy straw and find it has heads on it still.

If all you want is straw, don't plant wheat, plant triticale, it's a wheat/rye cross that tends to grow taller, giving more straw yields and cheaper seed. Modern wheat has been bred to produce short stems with big heads, not the best for straw yields.

Hey,
Thanks for the info. I was going to have a friend combine for me but then I am left with all that wheat and it will take a while to use it up. I will look into your suggestion. Does it grow in zone 7? I live in North Carolina.

Not real sure, but I would think it would grow just fine. Check your local extension office or seed dealers.
