hey, good for you. We have been getting some late summer rains and I don't know if the drought is broke yet but it's wetter than it's been. Have you ever read Elmer Kelton's The Time it Never Rained? Set in west Texas in the 50s, It brought tears to my eyes.

That was one of the best books I ever read. My dad gave me a copy quite a few years ago. Great reading .

No, I have not read that, but I will. There have been a few good books and movies written about drought in the Dakotas, Manitoba and Saskatchewan and they are all tear jerkers (Don't Shoot the Teacher, Who Has Seen the Wind, The Drylanders). In the 30's when farmers were dryed out and blown out in Sask. and abandonning the farm they would water the tree in the yard before they left. My Dad used to talk about being out plowing with 4 horses when THE BIG RAIN finally came to end the drought. He claims he tried to make the last half mile round, but soon the water was running in the furrow. He also claims (claimed) that he unharnessed the horses in the field, let them go and slowly walked home. Must have been a nice walk.

Drought is Something most of the world will never understand, and I hope they never have too. But yeah, I've been there too and night after night at dusk walking out on the porch, not so much to pee, but to scan the western sky one last time to see if maybe some little cloud is showing up. You just never give up hope.

I talked to one old man this summer, he had lived here all his life ( well, all of it so far) and he made the comment that "so far it had rained every year"

I can relate to the old homesteader watering the tree. As tillers of the soil, we are going to do what we can for as long as we can. And even when we giveup, something deep inside does not.

Let it rain til Hell's a pond.
