This looks like a "neck pumpkin" or a processing Butternut. Both are tan when mature but the vines in the photo look young so the fruit may still be green. The long neck is good because there are only seeds in the bulb and all edible flesh in the neck. Make sure it is ripe before using it. Some of these hava a 120 day or more season. If picked immature they will still mature but may not store as well. Check internet or extension office for best way to cure and store. Where did you get the seed?

is this a way it could get crossed from a Zuchinni over to a butter nut squash?

the butter nut over grow over the Zuchinni.

It would have to go back to the parent seed.. There are lots of types of squashes, as well as gourds, they can all cross.. and what the seed is going to produce is anyone's guess.. Also, it could have just been some type of genetic mutation.. It does happen, sort of like a 2-headed calf...

It looks like a gourd to me. It does not look like the butternut squash that I have grown, tan to orange in color without a long neck.

A agree on gourd, or else a Zuchinni. I have seen Zuchinnis get huge, if left on the vine...

Wouldn't a zuchinni be a darker green? I wish I could see a picture of the leaves of the plant.

NOt all zuchinis are dark green. We've got some that re-seeded from last year, and they're a yellow variety. I think there's a paler green color too. My brother and I have a pumpkin patch and we're just starting to get set-up. Got all sorts, but it was a bad year for our pumpkins and most of the cool varieties just didn't do squat. Others did something but not enough to be worth while it seems....

Yes, a true Zuchinni would be a darker green, as well as being on more of a bushy plant.. Now that genetic engineering is taking place, I think we are going to see a lot more mutants... In fact, if you want to see some genetic mutations. I can show you several families on my road... LOL...

Squash are bad aboout cross-polinating. I've never seen very desirable results.
