I've been using blobs of grease smeared over the mouldboards but its messy, so I'm looking for a spray-on solution. What do you guys use?

Thanks

The cheapest rattle can enamel Wally has to offer. One can does 4 bottoms. Cheaper than grease, and cleans off easy in a few passes. Like the others have said, just smear it on and forget it.

My vote is for left over spray paint.. or a food grade grease.

No need to be extra - cruel to the environment by using regular axle grease... besides... the paint stays on longer...

The local farm store sells a product called "plow coat" which comes in a gallon can. I think it costs $5-6. Graphite products are more costly. I use a cheap brush and coat plow bottoms, ripper points and cultivator shovels. This stuff will endure outside storage. The stuff I really liked to use in the bygone days was old wagon wheel hub grease. It was rubbery and would also stay-on forever.

Every so often I go to the local land-fill and get a box of spray paint.About every color you can think of.Handy for jobs like this(and other misc.) and they're happy to get rid of it for the taking. ~brad

Same as Vally Farm - oldest left over rattle can paint left laying around. Otherwise the canned paint left over from the last time I painted the bathroom ceiling, etc; brushed crudely onto the moldboards and coulters.

Key principle is to never BUY paint for a job like this - anything left over works fine!

I used heavy grease one year. I still had to go down by the river where there's a sandy spot to clean off the moldboards before plowing. Coarse sand does it real quick. Finally solved the problem altogether. Have not moldboarded anything since 1961. Still have the plow though, "just in case".

PS to above post: I could hook that plow to my WD Allis today, go down to that sandy spot by the river, and have those moldboards shining like mirrors within about 20 minutes. After 45 years of sitting outside.

What ever rattle can of paint I have laying around. Cheaper the better. They all will stick well to a clean surface and protect the plow all winter too. Mike

John Deere used to sell a soft black plow coating made just for them. They may still sell it .

LPS rust inhibitor or Corban 35, they contain BMS3-35. They are used in commercial A/C to prevent corrosion and are moisture inhibitors.

Doug: Graphite, I've been using it on plow wear parts since I bought my cyclo corn planter in 1975. In the beginning I painted on with a brush, today I use spray cans. The beauty of graphite, yes it wears off but in the process the dry lubrication scours as well or better than any shined up moldboard.

Grease is by far still the best. I wouldn't waste my money on that spay-on junk.

Tractor and farm stores often carry a soft spray paint made for the purpose. I find it won't stand sun and snow for more than a year or two outside but its far better protection than grease. Otherwise any low priced spray paint will scour off once you go to plowing again.
