The other day Jeb and I were in the shop and he was "helping" me. He loves to be out with me. Well, he found the pump handle to my small hydrolic jack and was finding things to tap with it. He just happened to hit the valve stem on my 48 jd b rear that was pretty rusted and on its last leg. The stem broke off and out started squirting the "calcium" liquid that had been there for eons. Needless to say I backed the tractor outside but not before it had doused the 35 chev ton and a half, 41 jd b we are restoring, and tools galore. I didn't have the heart to get on him too bad since the rim should have been replaced long ago. It scared Jeb and he ran away to the house!

I bet my dad was happy when I was big enough to learn the wrench sizes. I could run and get him what he needed while he was crawling underneath something. 'Course it was about the same time that I started using the tools, and not returning them.

Similar situation here earlier this summer. Finally broke down and bought rings for AC G.

Teaching my boys (15 & 16) how to replace rings or so I thought. We got the pistons out, removed the old rings and cleaned the pistons. As a reward for helping out I gave them the old rings to play with (flicking them around like beer tabs or mini-frisbees).

Meanwhile new rings came in and I set them on the shop bench after inspecting them for a future install date. Well since I did not specifically say not to play with the new rings guess what!

Come date to install them and not a ring to be found anywhere. Ask what happened and the finger pointing at each other began. Man, I was HOT at first but then cooled down and admitted I should have told them not to play with the rings sitting on the bench.

Kids, seemed like a good idea at the time :-)
Seriously I wouldn't have it any other way.

I have a 6 year old and a 4 year old to help keep things interesting. Couple weeks ago I left the keys in the mower cub cadet - something I try to avoid since the boys like to play driver. I usually pull them and hang them on a nail high above the work bench (along with several other keys).

The 4 year decided to help me out and hid the key to the cub so his 6 year old brother wouldn't try to start the mower. Only problem is he hid it in his sand pile. I might find it someday.

Yup, last week my mom was watchin my almost 2 yr. old nephew, and he was helping me fix the chopper... Give him a wrench and he'd bang on anything and everything, those extra knives really made a cool sound..

Just made me smile because I was the same way...

I know the feeling, my 2y.o. son is really helpful. Everytime I put a tool down, he picks it up and hands it back.

My parents always tell the story about me checking the air in the tires. I had seen my dad use the air gauge and had been given an old broken one to use with my pedal tractor (like those solids were gonna go flat).
The front tires on my mom's car kept going down. Dad would put air in them and the next week, they'd be down again. Couldn't find the leak on either of them. Then they caught the leak one day. They have picture proof. I am kneeled down at the tire checking that air pressure.

With all the stories my parents have on me when I as a little rug rat around my dad working on stuff, I don't even want to know what my kids are gonna get into when they come along.
