My farm is a little over an hour from home and I can only get down there about twice a week. I have an old shack of a barn that I keep my tractors out of the weather with, and it has a couple of rooms in it (old graineries) that I keep stuff in. There is no way to lock this old barn up and the place is way out in the country. I have the gate locked but that doesnt keep anybody from climbing over the fence. Thieves are pilfering me to death. I cant keep anything down there anymore and have to load and unload my truck everytime I go with everything that I might "possibly" need. (which is everything) I just dont have the money to build a metal building or the like yet. Does anyone have any ideas of how I can secure my tools etc? I have thought about shipping containers but not sure how secure they are. Thanks

pull in a decent used trailer and rent it out cheaply to someone and he can be your guard.

AH heck just build yourself a LARGE LIVE TRAP and bait it inside the barn when the theives walk in the trip the trap and it slams shut and there is no way for them to open it or have any way to cut themselfs out of it , and ok so its a couple days before ya find them . Back years ago i had a problem sorta like that and the rumor got around that there was this deranged Viet Nahm vet running around in camos armed with a machine gun and would shot first even got rid of the hard core druggys that thought that they could plant there CASH crop with mine 380 rounds of 5.56 got the message across to them. Just call it VARMET hunting.

I worked for an equipment dealer in a major"city" and we got robbed constantly, we had state of the art alarms, cameras, double thickness safety glass, and chained and locked all machines to no benefit. I was working late one night and heard there was a shooting near my location. The very next morning I started the rumor I had shot an intruder. I meant only to keep my coworkers from harrassing me for not catching the thiefs. What happened was the rumor spread through the community and we were never robbed again.I dont know of legalities and this was not my intention but it did work. Good luck though.

all the above are good ideas but you have to solve the real problem the thieves! If they are repeatedly doing it its got to be a local. You may have to have a friend drop you off and camp out and catch them. A body count would sure solve the problem!!

What you need is a booby trap. By you a old single shot gun and put a trip wire on the door to the trigger. They will think twice the nest time they go to steal something. Has to be a neighbor or a local.

Yes, that sounds tempting, but not worth going to prison for... I remember a a case, years ago, in MN, I think... A guy kept having stuff stolen, he rigged a gun to a trip wire, killed a person, & got a big prison sentence...

Had a guy here locally who was losing a lot of stuff on his remote farm (he didn't live there)- he decided to sit there all night, and sure enough, Mr. Meth shows up to see what new stuff the farmer had purchased to replace his recent losses. Farmer shot a warning shot, right through Mr. Meth's Head. Big jury trial for manslaughter, jury quickly returned a Not Guilty verdict. Big meth problem hereabouts, and the general public is mad as hell and, apparently, is not gonna take it anymore.

Put a sign out front of the building:

This Building Guarded by
Shotgun 3 Nights Per Week.
You Guess Which Three.

The go out there and camp when you can.
Shouldn't be long before theives get the idea.

Get angle iron scrap and hardface welding rod.Face each angle opposite each other;one up one down.drill a 3/8 hole for the padlock[chrome masterlock] and weld the hardface rod around the holes. If you can weld some stainless rod on it is even harder to hacksaw. This is not impossible to cut but it will dicourage some theives. Also make a sign that says "back in ten minutes" or leave a radio playing in the barn.I have an Elvis head in my upper barn window that sorta looks like a guy looking out at you.Keep your tools in a worksite type gangbox where the lock is recessed and lock it to a column with a cobralinks motorcycle lock.Last suggestion cost money I realize but so do your tools.A shipping container would have to have angle welded on and the round master lock with no hasp secured to it otherwise the locks are exposed too much.Im talking about the lock where boltcutters cant get around anything.

Buy a few of the game cams, they trip from movement, then you have pictures that you can take to the local cop shop. Will not stop the problem but you may also get the person behind bars and that would slow it down and or stop it if its just one person. Also make sure you land is posted with keep out etc. signs

I have about the same problem, but a much smaller building to secure. You got to make it look hard to break into. BIG locks and BIG chains, BIG bars on windows, etc. But, if you gives the crooks enough time they will break into just about anything. So,I also hooked up a very LOUD alarm that goes off when the doors are messed with (uses a vibration switch)and put up fake security cameras(and signs)to further discourage them. I really had to work at making it secure...no easy/cheap answer that I know of. Pete

Put up signs saying security cameras in use and see if this deturs them some . you also want to get an infra red camera so you can get good pictures in complete darkness .

Yup - I called up a friend/neighbor the other day to see if I could borrow his plow. He told me to go hitch up to it. I drives over there (about a mile) and, low-and-behold, the plow is nowhere to be seen! Checked all over the place, deffinatly gonzo. Called him back and told him, he wasn't pleased. I like the game camera idea.

I think the shipping container is the best solution to your problem. The camera idea isn't bad either. I can put up with a lot, but when someone takes something from me I am not very happy. Someone came into my yard and stole my car one time. When I was growing up on the farm we never locked the house, and the keys were always left in the car. Stan

Your going to have to work on your buildings you got to make them more secure if you can. Yes, heavy chain and a hardened steel lock thats more resistant to bolt cutters. Even then, the theives know that nobodys around, so they problably won't leave you alone until that changes.

I would just about have to rebuild my barn in order to make it more secure. It is 100 years old with just a pole frame and tin on the outside. I like the idea of the deer camera. Sure would like to catch em but unfortunately there would probably always be somebody to take their place. Thanks for all the ideas. Im going to check into the container.

The only plus about combatting theft is that theives tend to be lazy. If your stuff is harder to steal than the next guy's, they'll go for his. Shipping containers are great- these things are designed from the start to be theft resistant-and do not cheap out on the lock either. Just make sure it's big enough that they don't take the whole thing. If you could it would be a good idea to "slip by" there through the week and check on things late in the day or night.
It's an agravation but the stuff you save will be your own.

And if you want your stuff back for half price check out all the local pawn shops.

yeah...

only way is to get some chaine and a heavy lock them together..

if you have power line 110v to the barn, get a light eye that comes on when sees move around in dark, dont use a light on it, plug a raido in to it inside the barn. yeah turn up loud and fix it so it turns a light on outside.

that what I did.

Shipping containers might be your best bet. Forget a metal building- they just take a cordless drill with nut-driver, go around to the back where they won't be seen, unscrew a panel and climb through the hole.
