Mornin guys.

I meant to ask Allen the other day how many acres it would take to support a pair in an average year in his area?

We were talking about land prices in the area.

And I got to thinking maybe land cost per pair might be about the same.

Dryland in his area is around $400 per acre and around $3000 in my area.

But 2 acres of land will support a pair here.

How does this compare with the rest of you?

Gary

I can push and get 1 pair to an acre with enough hay to feed them but I usually dont. Somewhere about 2 acres to the pair and hay to feed off that is more typical (I just dont like moving electric fence).

I bought a tract of land down the road two years ago for a little over $7000 an acre at auction and the spring before got some for $500 an acre (net, sold off the house and a 2- 5 acre lots before I closed so it netted $500 for the land).

On irrigated here I need 2 acres per cow for as long as I can irrigate. Probably 6 months typically. In dryland situations its about 25 acres per cow for that same 6 months of grazing.

Same here.

Standard dryland is 54 acres per pair per year.

With our 60+ inches of rain a year and the ability to have green grass year round by growing winter rye you could get it down to about 1 cow per acre around here but most do not push it that hard because of the work involved.

I feed my milk cows on about 1/2 to 3/4 acre per cow during the grazing season(Apr to Nov) they average about 60lbs of milk. This is in Western NY's unique climate. The rest of the state averages 1-2 acres for milk cows, less for beef cows. I raise 30-40 heifers on 25 acres.

2 milking cows per acre here in E Cent Wis but move west a few miles and you'll need about 20 acres to do the same thing unless you irrigate. My figure of 2 per acre is optimistic. You might end up having to buy feed once in a while.

We figure 10 to 12 acres here in the NE Sandills for 5 monthes of summer grazing, mid May thru mid Oct. Other areas of the Sandhills could be slightly different, depends on where you're at, your grazing methods, etc.

It takes 10 - 12 acres here for a 6 month grazing season.

Mornin Cowman

That 2 acres here includes the hay to carry the cow and calf year around.

Ex. I have 68 cows and a total of 125 acres of pasture and hay ground.

My cows do get about two months feed off of cornstalks also.

So I assume that it would take another 8 or so acres of hay to feed yours but I know theres other feed sources available.

Yeah, I can get enough winter feed off an acre or 2 per cow and the use 2-3 more acres of crop residue.
