Why does it seem that the 5020 cost about half the price as a 4020 does, and it's twice the tractor?
I can never figure this out, I can get a REALLY GOOD 5020 for half the price of a 4020. Is there something I am missing that the 4020 can do that a 5020 can't?

My 4020 does everything I've asked it to do and then some. I run a haybine and a baler all summer long and it just keeps going. Diesel at $3.00 per gallon is still economical to run this ol boy. I can pull a 4 bottom plow or disc with no trouble and still manuever around a fence row with a chopper. A very versitile tractor indeed.

The 4020 cost more because they are a more all round tractor. You can do all most anything with a 4020. Chopping corn to raking hay..... A 5020 is a big mass of iron!!!!! If you want to pull a house and have 40 acres to turn it around the 5020 is the tractor for you. You don't see 5020 hooked up to 3 point hitch bush hog!!!!

raleigh, They are 2 totally different tractors.
2 different frame set ups. etc.etc. The 4020 will weigh about 9500 lbs + -. The 5020 will weigh in closer to 15000 lbs. The engines are 2 different engines also. 95 hp apposed to 135+hp.
The 4020 is a true rowcrop tractor, that wasdesigned for all 4 or 6 row equipment, either 3-pt, or side mount.
The 5020 was a row crop tractor but its wt and bulkiness made it better suited for primary tillage, or large heavy 3-pt work. it is just a little tooo big to be a chore tractor. It hasn't been till the larger MFWD tractors that loader really became widely availabe for these ol girls, Not to say that there hasn't been some company out there that made a loader for one.
The 4020 had a standard and Power Shift trannys where the 5020 is stanndard only.
The tractors to compare a 4020 to are..... .
4000,4010,4320,4520,4620!!! Same basic chassis.
The tractors to compare a 5020 to are..... .
5010, 6030. Here too the same chassis.
These are tractors only in the JD lineup. Older HP can be bought cheaper than lower hp tractors in most cases. The popularity of the 4020 still to this day had kept its resale prices up. Though most folks will walk past a 4520 PS in better condition to pay more money for a wore-out 4020, Go Figure! Hope this helps.
Later,
John A.

You mentioned people might walk past a 4520 Power Shift tractor to get at a 4020. Yes; Probably most of the time. BUT! IF ANYONE KNOWS OF A DECENT 4520 POWER SHIFT somewhere that could be bought, or is setting and might be bought, I'd like to know. Those 'white elephants' are built strong and would make me a better loader tractor for loading truck trailers than my 4020, though it does very well. I could use the extra frame height, front axle strength, and genaral stability. ..... . And by the way, a 4520 and 4620 does not use the same chassis frame size as a 4430, 4320, 4020, or 4010 tractor. Thanks for any help anyone can render for a tip in finidng a decent 4520 POWER SHIFT. I'm not intersted in a Syncro for this application. Again, Phil

I may be all wrong on this because of time, but the 4520-4620 had the 5010 Trans and rear end in them and weighted 3-4000 lbs. more than a 4320 or 4020.

I'll agree with most all of what you said except I would not compare a 4020 to the 4520,4620 these are way heavier built and only have 1000 rpm pto.

One thing you didn't mention, a 4020 has 540 and 1000 rpm PTO. 4520 4620 and 5020 are all 1000 rpm only. A 4020 brings more because it is so much more useful.
