CASE 480D 4CYL WITH 155747 FUEL INJECTOR PUMP.

ENGINE STARTS GREAT, BUT WILL ONLY GAIN A FEW HUNDRED RPM THEN SLOWLY DIES WITH THROTTLE WIDE OPEN. WILL RUN FASTER IF THE GOVERNOR IS HELD OPEN YET WILL SLOWLY DIE. LET IT SET A COUPLE OF MINUTES AND STARTS RIGHT UP WITH THE SAME PROBLEM OF DYING. I'VE REPLACED BOTH FILTERS, REMOVED AND CLEANED ALL INLET FUEL LINES FROM TANK TO PUMP. SAME PROBLEM. IS THERE A SCREEN FILTER INSIDE THE PUMP INLET PORT? IT STARTS GREAT, JUST WON'T CONTINUE TO RUN. I"M AT MY WITS END.

About 3-4 years ago i was having a similar problem with my CIH 885. Would start fine and run ok for a while and then start to die. I could get to the field and begin to work but the engine would just start slowing down. if I pushed in the clutch for a few minutes the RPMs would come back up and I could go a little further. Messed around with it until it got so bad I couldn't climb a small hill without it competely stalling. Finally had to pull it home with my old Case 630. After draining the filters, calling the dealer, and a few other things I discovered that the fuel tank had lady bugs in it. They were plugging the outlet. under no load enough fuel would seep through the dead bugs and the engine would keep running but not enough fuel could get through under load. Flushed the tank twice and it was ok. I think the critters must have gotten into the hose of my bulk tank and then pumped into the tractor. I put a screen over the end of the hose and always check it before filling my tractor. No trouble since. My fuel supplier said the lady bugs are attracted to the diesel fuel. Guess this isn't what they mean by bio diesel.

Thanks Phil for the info. I"ve drained the tank, changed the filters, blowed out the lines. still the same problem. My big question still is: Is a there an internal filter screen inside the pump inlet nozzle? I cannot find any break down pictures of the pump that might show this.

That's what I suspected.

Sounds like the plastic governor damper ring deep inside the pump has become brittle, and distintegrated, and pieces of it are jammed in the housing pressure regulator valve/return fitting that screws into the punp cover.

(This, or any other obstruction in the fuel return circuit will cause the engine to shutdown, as his is doing.)

Removing the fitting/valve and cleaning it out SHOULD allow it to start and run, but get the pump OH'd because as the plastic ring completely fails, the metal parts it isolates will bang together, causing wear and metal filings in the pump.

Could be an air supply problem, but if so then some thing is clogged up BAD.
Prolly feul supply problem. If the tank is slap dab full and the cap or vent is clogged totally up---maybe.
Then A- there's a screen or filter or obstruction that you ain't found yet
B-there are a group of little problems "that just couldn't be it" like timeing+low compression+shut off out of adjustment+etc.
C- the feul pump is so wore out that this is the best it can do.

Take a break, have lunch, then do something else and it'll come to you.

Thank you all for your suggestions. It sounds like the plastic ring is the culprit. I"ll just have to pull the pump and have it serviced or changed out.

Thanks again

I apologize to all of you for not answering you individually. To be honest, I didn't know how to do that. This was the first time I tried to use the forum and it took me awhile to discover how it worked. Still may not be correct. Thank you all very much for being so helpful, even the one who scolded me for having my Caps Lock on. Maybe he will read it now.
