The fly fre date here in NY is around the third week in sept. Cooler climate, earlier date. Warmer, later. Your county extesion office can give you the best info for your exact area. Named the Hessian fly because it was supposedly brought over from Europe in staw bedding used on British ships bringing Hessian mercenary soldiers here to fight the colonials. Maybe the colonials just disliked the Hessian soldiers so they named something bad after them. Many Hessians stayed here after the war and settled. For what thats worth.

I believe the Hession fly works on the wheat stalk so that the stalk dies after it heads but before it fills. Usually we would see a few white stalks in a field but not enough to be a problem. The fly free date is when it is cool enough so the fly is done laying eggs for the season. Try this link.

iowa tire guy has it right. The hessian fly lays it's eggs in the newly emerged plant and the damage isn't done until the following spring when the plants do all of the bad things you can imagine when a parasite invades the stalk. 8 years out of 10 nothing happens when you don't follow the guidlines, the other 2....oh well.

Not as true today with the new Hybreds but You should wait until after the fly date to sow wheat. It has to do with the Mating and laying eggs of The Hession Fly in or on the wheat seed.It veries Countys to Countys and State to State on Dates and year to year.I am no expert but I have seen some Years you should have followed it and other years Nothing happened.
