Anybody ever reseeded grass in yard? I haven't had much luck. To start with , it was a sand hill that was leveled to put house on. Covered part of yard with black dirt, 8 to 12 inches. Grass comes up in spots and leaves bare spot everywhere, rain washes dirt away and mowing yard is a cloud of dust. Beating lawn mower to death, hard to walk across. I've tried disking and harrow to reseed but clumps of roots ball up in harrow and leave furrows. Bot a power harrow, thot that might work better. Works up groung real good, but too small of an area to get any speed up , so leaves big ridges and then again with the root balls. Wonder about dumping some more dirt and using an old road drag to smooth out and fill in holes and then seed again. Grass thats there will keep on growing and if I mow before it gets established won't suction from mower just blow grass seed away? I am open to any reasonable suggestions, I used to complain about having to mow grass, now I wish I had grass to mow. Yard is over an acre, too much to try to water.Do you cover seed or leave it on top of soil? I have tried covering some with straw, but it still comes up spotty. If I had the $$$ i would just sod it and be done, but I'd have to win the lottery to do that. Thanks in advance, Chris

ok as most of you know i do landscaping and first you need to lime your yard with the granule stuff. if you hadnt added that dirt i would say dethatch it. ok back to the subject. leave the dead grass there. disc it in let it sit for about two days and the grass will rot. now that your yard has a good base of nitrogen and top soil and sand. depending on where you are i would just spread a 40 pound bag of centipede. if you dont know it grows well in sand once you get that done water it for about two hours a day. about two weeks later add some more lime and just keep watering it. if the spot isnt to big i would seed it then add some straw. that keeps the moisture in. if you do that just water it for about an hour or maybe and hour an a half.

I forgot after seeding roll the seed bed this also helps with germation you need the seed in contact with soil for it to grow .

#1 your working the ground 2 deep and you need to lime black dirt you may have used to strong a fertlizer and burnt up the new grass . the best thing to do is fill in the bare spots that have holes then rent a slit seeder and put on the seed heavy then cover with straw and most important you need to keep it wet but not soggy for about 3 weeks this is the best time of year to start a lawn .

I just disked about an half acre for new lawn.I own a chain harrow but in order to produce a fine seed bed I decided to drag it over with an old bed spring. I wound up with a really nice flat, fine plot.I am considering dragging over again after seed is spread.I would like comments if someone else has done this way.

Chris; First off I would check the quality of the black dirt you brought in, sounds like it may not be right. Get a soil test on it. Second For a yard that size I would rent a Skid Steer (BobCat) and there is a couple choices for working the lawn, you may not need the roto tiller version so let the rental people help you there. Then when you seed I would throw in a healthy amount of ANNUAL rye or other cover. Depending on wind and erosion use chopped straw or other mulch if needed.

Hi Chris, sounds as though you have enough topsoil on it. I would re -disc the whole area until you have everything worked up well.{ I just did a 2 acre horse pasture for a customer that took over 6 hours of discing before it looked good} Then broadcast seed at recommended rate, next, york rake the ground lightly just to level and cover the seed. I always mulch seeded lawns with hay, [with a straw blower] the extra seed in the hay helps ,plus it doesn't blow around as much. If you don't have axcess to a york rake, you can drag around a heavy plank with good results. Now is one of the best times of the year to start a new lawn, at least here in the north east! good luck, Dave
