That engine is one of the best although I haven't been near one in 40 years. We had several on hay balers. Hard starting when hot was, in most cases, caused by fuel vaporization (vapor lock). They started good when cold. We used to just leave them run all day. Even when refueling. Just stand upwind. Chaff gets in between the baffle plates and the heads and can catch on fire quite easily. Always a big surprise when you're baling into the wind and turn around and see your engine on fire. We used ValvEase for the sticky valve problem. I would think fuel vaporization would be a bigger problem now as today's gasoline is more volatile.

I've been running a Hesston SP moco with that engine for 33 years. Only trouble was sticky valves. Make sure to put Marvel MO in it when you put it up for the winter. Electric start is good and keep an extinguisher handy. That fan will get electric short/chaff going in a hurry.

Very often they will not restart when hot.

Otherwise they are a good engine.

I've used / rebuilt VH4D engines from skid loaders. They're just like anything else , worn out/hard starting..Fresh/stars good..They run all day long without problems..They're not bashfull drinking gas..They only run about 7 lbs. of oil pressure , but it's enough....I wouldn't be afraid of a Wisconsin..Tried and proven..
