I got a 1977 Mustang Cobra II I bought as a project car 5yrs ago but I never got around to do much with it (I was going to turn it into a drag car). The car is in really good shape with not very much rust at all, very restorable. It has a 302 V8 (5.0L) and a 4spd transmission with a 9" rearend. The car has only 53,000 miles on it, it currently isn't running, but the motor is complete and the drive shaft isn't in it, but I have it and was told by previous owner it needed to be shortened since it originally had an automatic transmission, but he took it out and put in this 4spd. The car is white with blue lemans stripes just as it came from the factory but it doesn't have the big silly cobra on the hood or say cobra along the bottom of the doors like most of them, but it is a true cobra and is a fastback. The interior is black vinyl but the front seats are both ripped, and the black carpeting is in poor shape the center console is missing and the dash has cracked over the years. What is this car worth?, a fellow stopped in and asked if it was for sale tonight and I'm thinking about letting it go.

Geez, I'm thinking that I might be a fool to let it go for $1,000 the longer I think about it, when I could spend just a day or two on it and get it running and then I could get 3x as much for it easy rather than let someone make money off from me. The car is all there!, all except the center console, thats the only thing that I don't have and the previous owner didn't know where it went, but since I was looking at it as a drag car, that wasn't a deal breaker. If I sold it for $1,000 I would be losing about $300 in the brand new radiator I bought for it. This car is going to be a fast one too, it is a real lightweight car, and was one of the lighest mustangs ever built so what I had always wanted to do is stuff a built 351W under the hood and have some fun at the dragstrip. Thats what my plans had always been, but since I odd jobbed it the last few years, I hadn't made much money and the car has sat, but thats gotta change anyways since I can't live with my parents and make no money forever!. I dunno, I am so on the fence with this one, my parents are now asking me if I really want to get rid of it, they'd kinda like it gone out of their yard, but they don't want me to get rid of something I really want and don't have a problem with it staying here as long as I do fix it. I would sell it now if I thought those guys might fix it, but it kinda sounded to me like him and his buddy have way too many projects on their hands, so when he was listing off this bunch of cars that him and his buddy have already, I started picturing an old dumpy mobile home out in the sticks with 10 junk cars (their treasures) around it, I don't have a clue if this was true, but I had a feeling that it was and there are places like that around here, especially in a couple of the neighboring towns that their zoning laws are lapse. I don't have a clue if my vision of them was correct, but that was what I was getting and I don't care to sell to someone that is going to definatly let the car go to waste. The value definatly has gone up on it, the book value is climbing according to that website. I don't want to keep it till it is wasted to a parts car either, it is way too nice for that!. That guy gave me too long to think though, so I am thinking of keeping it another year and see what happens, tell the fellow I have changed my mind for now, but to come and see me again next year if I still got it sitting there.

You remind me of a Re:Whats my old car worth?. in reply to Jonfarmer, 09-02-2006 19:33:04

Story I once heard. A wife told her husband that she wanted a different car. He said go ahead and put our old car in the paper for sale and he would find another. Well she wrote and put the ad in the local paper. The next day her husband was looking through the paper "autos for sale" ads, well he got all excited when he found what he thought he was looking for. He said honey I found just what we need! So he went to call on that ad got to the phone started to dial the number then discovered it was his own phone number. It was the ad his wife placed for their own old car ;))
Are you selling yourself???

According to that website, it is worth $2,500 in fair condition, which it is in fair condition, just doesn't run, so therefore, I don't know as I could've got that much for it, actually I doubt it, but my $1,000 price sure didn't seem to scare him away.

I'm guessing a lot more restored than restorable and running than complete. ebay motors should have something to compare to. Ask him to make an offer. If it excites you more than having a stalled project around deal it.

I'd say you are right, it would be worth more restored, and running V.S not. The project is stalled since I hadn't ever developed a cashflow to put any money in this old car. I am kinda sad I didn't get to do anything with it, but it is sinking into the ground. I am just a kid though (22yrs old), and I could still restore it, but I dunno when I will be getting around to it. What do you think I should do?.

Dump it and take the cash before it is worthless. Millions of guys have bought old cars with grand ideas of restoring them. That's why you see ads that say " 11 thousand invested, will sell for 3 thousand."

They run out of patience and money. Happens all the time. Take the money and run.

I am not so sure the guy that wants to buy it will fix it either, he said him and his buddy were both Ford fanatics, and he listed off a whole bunch of cars they already had, so it sounded to me like he already had his hands full of projects. If I sell it, I would much rather sell it to someone who is going to fix it up, otherwise, I'd just soon keep it and maybe I'll fix it someday. I told him when he asked if it was for sale, I said "maybe", then we went down and looked at it, he did ask me how much I wanted for it, and I told him I would like to get $1,000 since thats what I had paid for it 5yrs go. He said he would think about it, and talk it over with his buddy, but he thought they would want it, so I don't know if they will be back or not, but thats where I am right now, but I set it up so that I could easily back out of the deal if I wanted to. I really do have mixed feelings about it, true, the car would be gone from our yard since it is nothing but an eyesore right now, and your right about it turning worthless, I know it has been deteriorating, rust appearing on the fenders that it didn't have and I actually felt bad about it sitting there the last few years. I will see if they come back, yeah I do kinda feel it is time to let it go, I turned away another fellow last fall who wanted to buy it. I am sick of mowing around it anyways!.
