I am need of a twisted clevis. They are listed with measurments and weight limits in pounds (6000, 12000, 16000, 20000, and 25000) For a three furrow plow, how big should i get? I measured the draw bar and it is about an inch think, and the 25000 lb clevis is the only one that has an measurement for an inch thick clevis. What do you guys suggest?

I buy my clevises (and shackles) based on the pin fitting the hole, not by load. Too small a pin in a hole stresses the contact point. That holds true from sailbloats to aircraft. I've examined sailboats that were demasted because of a small pin. The deck eye (hole in the chainplate) fails before the pin does. If you have a 1" hole put a 1" clevis pin through it. You can add a bushing and put a 3/4" pinned clevis (I use 3/4" in my drawbar). If you take up the load quickly the stress to overcome friction/inertia is about twice what a slow, gradual loading places on it. It's always best to err on the side of too strong.

If I put a 6,000 lb dead load on my tractor I'd spin the wheels even with the tires loaded.

Now Charlie,

Are you trying to tell me that I can't use an old square headed 1/2 X 8" bolt as a drawbar pin? You know, the ones that are all beat up and half worn out anyways?

Just don't know what this world is coming to. :>)

Well, when the Delaware & Hudson see all that I use their old railroad spikes for around here they will be mighty suspicious.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Yeah, look at the NE test data. A lot of older tractors won't pull 6000 pounds.

So, if they wont pull 6000 pounds, how can they pull so well in a tractor pull? or rated for a big plow?

But, with that said, how big of clevis should i get?

Farmallman

As the others have said a 5/8s clevis will be fine.

I pulled a 4 bottom behind a 856 in tree roots and never bent the 5/8 clevis.

But I did trip the hitch and lost the plow a couple of times.

Dunno,

Used to pull those old 2 bottom tumble plows thru heavy alfalfa with a little 5/8" twisted clevis.

I agree, in most cases, the 5/8" clevis will easily handle all that the tractor can give it.
