My sister is putting in board fence made of pressure treated pine. She wants to stain it dark just for cosmetics so it doesn't fade to silver/gray. Anyone have a recipe for homebrew fence stain that is cheaper than the stores?

That would be my blood if I buy another tractor before selling a few.

Seriously, the Black Walnut husks work GREAT.

A neighbor coated his barn and fence with nasty old diesel truck motor oil many years ago and it still looks good !

The treated wood has to dry out before you can coat it, or the coating will just roll off like it's supposed to. The lumberyard guy told me an easy test: Drop a few drops of water on the wood, if it soaks in, you can paint it or coat it however you wish, but if it beads up, then it needs more dry time. Good luck.

Transmission oil makes a great preservative & is cheap. Gives a slight red tint. If you use used oil it's a little darker.

I saw a home improvment show that had a guy make stain with 1 gallon of turpentine and some pigment, may 10 bucks for the turpentine....I dont know. What about vegtable oil and pigments? or..... used motor oil? (the tree huggers would want to talk to you if you did this)

she can stain it black using latex driveway sealer which is about $10 bucks for 5 gallon. but let fence dry out for about 6 months before putting anything on it.

Take fresh black walnut husks and soak them in water.
It will make a medium stain.
Cook it a little to evaporate some of the water
and that mite thicken it up some and make it darker.

You can pick up all the black walnuts with husks
that you could possibly want out of my yard.

Got a bumper crop of walnuts myself this year.
Squirrels are really buisy.
Butternuts cropped big last year. Only a few this year.
