My tractor will not shift into 2 or 4 th gear. I may have caused the problem when I loosed a bolt on the fight side thinking that is was the bolt to check the fluid level. Every thing works except that it will not go into 2 or 4 th gear.

Help.

OK here is what I think happened.
You removed the shift plate pivot bolt far enough for the 2nd 4th gear plate to fall and the shifter is not contacting it or moving it.

Here is the bolt

Here is the bolt and the plates it holds in place. I drew a red line showing the path of the bolt.

If I am correct so far you will need to remove the shifter cover from the top of trans; remove the plate pivot bolt; align every thing back up; and install everything back together.

You are correct! I thought something changed, because when I saw that the bolt was longer than an drain pug , I retighten it and it was much tighten going back into the housing.. I can see from your diagram that it was pushing againist the housing. It still shifts OK in reverse, so the 2 and 4 plate needs to be put back inplace.

How hard is it to take the top off? Does the shifting go back togather. Your diagram cut off the top so I can't tell, it the top only has the the shifter rod that goes down into the tranmission. I have taken the top off of a WD and was able to get it back on, but it was a bear.

Thanks for you help!

Dick

John,

I was able to get the top off and get the 2 and 4 part back up where it belongs.

Since I took the top off in N, I think my gears are not lined up correctly. It still will not shift correctly.

Can you tell me how to get the gears in correct position when I put the top back on?

Something is not lined up corrrect.

Thanks,

DP

It is all back togather and it works. I had to use a long bar to push the shifter into the slot on the 2 and 4 rail. It took me awhile to figure that out, but I became an expert on taking the top off and put it back togather..

It was easier than putting the WD 45 tranmission top on.

I really want to thank you for your advice, I would not been able to fix it without your help.

Like I said before; I do not own a 4 speed trans so I can only go by what the manual says about it.
If you go back to the main page of this site and scroll down you will see a section titled FORD. Go down there and ask your question as others do know a lot more about the 4 speed than I do.

I will put a link to the Ford board if you have problems finding it.

Now with that said you should be able to remove the top (in netural) and work the shifting forks by hand and see the couplings moving applying the gears. Make sure all are in the netural (center position) position and then install the top.

I have a 5 speed trans so I can only tell you what the manual says about the 4 speed.

Remove the 9 bolts on the cover and lift the cover off.
NOTE!!!!! there is a shift rail spring and detent ball that the cover holds down. Watch for these and remove.
Back off the pivot bolt and align the shift plate finger into the shifter rails.
Make sure the gasket is still good on the piviot bolt and install bolt.
Replace the spring and detent ball on top of case.
Install gasket and top with the gear shift lever positioned into the gear shift plates.

Should I put the gear shift in nutrel before I take the top off? I hope that I can just loosen the bolt again and slip the 2 and 4 part back up into place. Are there any shiting forks attached to the top?

Thanks again, You are great help

DP

P.S. the tractor is out in the Feild. I think I will put it back on a trailer before iI start taking the top off.
