Hi, I am hoping there is someone here that can help me understand this better. I just finished putting together a D-175 engine for my 1967 AC I-600 industrial backhoe / loader tractor, so I'm anxious to finish the project and get her going. I have drained all the other fluids for replacement and I'm wondering what's the best stuff to put back in. The operator's manual calls out type "A" automatic transmission fluid for the shuttle clutch, power steering, torque tube reservoir, & hydraulic system. I've done some research and found the general opinion is Dexron III is okay to use in place of the type "A" fluid, but since I happen to have 10 gals of AW-46 hydraulic fluid already, I was thinking about using that. Is there anything wrong with using this for everything?

Another question I have is the manual says to use SAE 80 EP transmission oil in the transmission, SAE 20-20W motor oil in the rear end, & SAE 30 in the engine. I know what they're talking about for the rear end and engine, but am a little confused by the SAE 80 EP. I'm assuming a regular 85w90 gear oil will be okay here. Am I correct? anybody have any opinions on this? Your help and knowledge is greatly appreciated. Thank you. Tim

I know alot about fluids but I am not an expert or a lube engineer. I would do the research, The hydro system should be able to use the hydraulic fluid you have AW-46, (but check first)

Hi Tim,

Sometime last year on the Farmall board, they had a extremely informitive thread on this very subject. You might want to search the archives as one user spent several days researching the subject.

EP is extreme pressure which specs a GL-5 gear lube. Sometimes a synthetic GL-4 can be found with an EP rating for use in a trans with copper alloy components. As for auto trans fluid and wet clutch compatable hydraulic oil/gear drive train lube. Different wet clutch oils and trans fluids use varying amounts of "friction modifiers". The wrong oil will make some trans slip and other oil/trans will make the shifts abrupt.
