OT Ford truck misfires

Question for you Ford guys that know what your talking about. (GM my strong suit). I have an 89' F-150 with the 5.0 FI engine. This has the TFI-IV ignition. About a year ago the module on the outside of the distributor went bad and I replaced it and retimed the engine and it ran strong and didn't miss a beat. Then after a few months it started an irratic misfire at most engine speeds. I replaced the plugs, wires, cap, rotor and coil it ran better but the pesky misfire is still there. I tried wiggling the distributor shaft to see if I noticed any bushing wear and it seems tight without a lot of up and down movement.
I put a timing light on it and watched the timing mark as the truck idled, The mark varies a few degrees. When I watch the light it intermittantly misses a blink and I notice a slight stumble from the engine. I tried several plug wires with the same result. The truck has 195,000 miles on it and the engine about 70,000 since a rebuild but I imagine the distributor is untouched original. Doe's this sound like a good candidate for a rebuilt distributor with a new module? My other question is the condenser mounted next to the coil, what is the purpose of this? I assume it's part of the ignition, could this be the misfire problem? Reason I ask is I've never seen a condenser on a GM HEI, but I know an iffy condenser will drive you crazy trying to fix a misfire on a point ignition system. Opinions please.

The truck seems fine now, runs smooth and has about as much power as one can expect from a 302 in a 5000 pound chassis. Well see if the gas mileage is better and if it's smooth at highway speed tomorrow.

Thanks for all the replys guys. I went up to Advance auto parts this morning and bought a rebuilt distributor. I'm getting ready to change it now. I'll post as to how things come out.

It takes a special tool and technique to rebuild the dist, for the DIY repair replace the dist. When I have a module frailer it git痴 a module, pick置p and coil, plug wires if needed, I rarely have a come back this way. Make sure you have the correct rotor, all the electronic ignition system rotors will interchange but only the correct on e for you application will perform well. The difference will be in the length so one two short will have to jump the spark to far in the cap and cause the KV to rise to much and possible to have a miss fire or lost voltage intermittently. A bad TPS, or EGR sensor and valve will have the loose trailer hitch effect like sum段n izz bump段n you from behind. Nutter common problem izz the wash board effect that happens at TCC (torque converter clutch apply) around 45 mph, the trans fluid needs to be changed to allow the TCC to apply smoothly. The additives have been depleted and the TCC clutch chatters apond apply.

I had a '91 F-150, low miles 69,000, that did the same thing. Replaced all that you did plus the distributor and the ECM (computer?). It still did it.
Traded it off and got another Chevy. I understand those better.

you can"t have any plug wires touching they bleed current from one another and this could cause a problem ford had a ervice bulliten out on this .

I have a 1986 F150 with5.

I have a 1986 F150 with the 5.0 in it. I was having the same problem and went through 2 modules. Ended up replacing the distributor because the stator in it was bad. There are 2 fuel filters under the truck, one on the frame and one in a big blue housing. I had to take it to Ford because I was unaware of the filter.
