Im about to buy two small JD's one with a 2cyl yanmar and the other with a 3cyl. according to the guy thats been maintaining these machines they both put fuel in the oil. he says its always a injection pump seal on those yanmars. My question is, is this true? is it common with yanmars? and how big a deal is it to reseal a pump? I remember working on some cat engines that had to have a specific tool for each different model engine to time the pump when reinstalling it...neither one of these engines have more than 1400 hrs on them and I dont think he even checked for any other possibilties...do yanmars run fuel thru the heads or have anything like jumper lines like a detroit? or is the fuel system isolated other than where the drive goes into the case?

Thanks to everyone, Once JC said "inside the engine" and "shims for timing" I decided this job is better left to the pro's....Don

If you still have questions, there"s a Yanmar forum on tractorbynet. com (if you haven"t tried it already). Good luck.

On the off chance, and the pump seal sounds quite well, a injector thats leaking[ no sealing at static pressure]will slowly weep fuel into the cylinder[s] and past the rings to the sump, and if the fuel tank is above the engine it is possible to happen. just an item to check, on two different engines????
Does the fuel in oil happen quickly[ overnight?] or takes time, also do they run smoky and lack power[ injector work required] and possible pump also, how about shutting off the tank for a day or so and re-check the oil for fuel?
good luck

The Yanmars I've had to do with all had the injectors and lines exposed on the outside of the engine. The injection pump however most all components of it are inside the engine. The engine has a camshaft that contacts rollers on the bottom of the pumps to put fuel to the injectors, and of course all this happens inside the engine. So I'd say this would be the only place fuel could get in the oil. I'm no help on the re-sealing the pump aspect but I do know the pump is shimmed and the timing changes based on more or less shims.
