I have just aquired an Austin Western grader andwould like to know how to tell what model it is so that I can possibly get some manuals and maybe... some parts. The data plate serial number is 88SW394. It is fully hydraulic and has a manual transmission. The bottom of the drive section of the trans has a large crack from what appears to be a bearing that has come apart from one of the idler gears. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Austin-Western was bought out by Clark Equipment back in the seventies; you could get A-W parts from Clark into the eighties, at least. Clark was bought out by Ingersoll-Rand; I doubt I-R sells parts for these old graders anymore.

There are enough old Austin-Western graders in boneyards that you shouldn't have too much trouble finding a complete transmission.

eBay would probably be your best bet for manuals. There's an 88H manual up for sale right now. However the old A-W graders are simple enough you shouldn't really need a manual.

Good luck. I had a lot of fun learning to operate my dad's 99H. It was a fine grader.

FWIW: 50 bearing catalog only lists 40-41 models; mentioned 'cuz lists as "Western Austin", and other literature may as well;
59 Ign/Str/Gen catalog : a few, 49-53, no model numbers shown, just grader, sweeper, plow etc.;
51 or so Fan Belt catalog: whole bunch,incl 88, 88H, 88M 45-49 (no 88SW), with IHC U9,UD9 engines, belts listed for fan,gen,hyd pump and hyd pump (front).(Engines apparently not used in trucks, no listing in my 36-49 truck manual. Desc of IHC engines can probably be found on oldihc.com if years sound about right. Hope some of this helpful; feel free to email if any questions.
