Piece in the Oregonian last Thursday reported GE/GM bentgrass had crossed with wild grass outside a "buffer area" designed to prevent such contact and mixing. Supposedly the first transgenic crop "escape" in the US, with grass seed being a major crop here it's raising a lot of questions. Did this local story get any coverage in your areas??

read an article in ACERS USA about RR alfalfa and some wording in the technology agreement that the farmer bears responibility for any and all pollen drift and contamination of any non-gmo crops.....that alone is enough for me not to plant them...Shawn

Nope, I dont read the paper, least of all the oregonian, but do you have a link to the article?

Just speculating, but it likely was a glyphosate resistant gene to make RR grass. It sure would be nice, but I feel the folks at the lab are blinded by the now dollar. I think they should be looking at lazers for weed control.

By the way, where in oregon are you? I'm just west of portland.

OP: We're in NE Portland, near NE42nd/Fremont. Don't know how to make a link, but go to oregonlive.com; in the search box at top of page choose "Oregonian" and put in keyword "grass crop". 8-17-06 story titled "Gene-tweaked grass on loose in Oregon' by Alex Pulaski should come up; clicking on thumbnail gets full story.
Scotmac: I wish we could designate safe areas...but pollen is designed to move around, and what with animals, birds, insects, the winds, plus human transportation (on peoples clothes, truck tires and loads, processing, train transportation, etc etc) how can anyplace remain uncontaminated?? I wish I could be optimistic...

Didn't see anything. But, GE/GM pollen is a BIG problem here. Have had non GMO soybeans contaminated from pollen drift, and corn affected by it also. We will have to desiginate couties or specific areas for non/GM crops to be raised if we are to keep them pure.
